The other week I attended a
banquet celebrating 65 years
since the Rural Youth of Lancas
ter County was established. Only
a few of the original members are
still around. However, it was a
very active group and they pro
duced 37 plays and held square
dances every month.
In 1945 membership grew
from 80 to 140 young people.
This social group also had an or
chestra. Trips were taken to New
York City and many places in
Pennsylvania. They also pub
lished a small newspaper which
was mailed to 250 members for
one cent each.
My husband was not able to at
tend the recent banquet as he had
just come home from the hospi
tal. The operation did not accom
plish the hoped for results, but he

Our oldest grandson, who lives
in Maryland, surprised us with a
visit a few weeks ago. He is
teaching physics and English in a
private school near Washington,
D.C. He declared that the meal
that I prepared for him was quite
different than his usual meals.
We had a pork roast, mashed po
tatoes, gravy, baked com, aspara
gus, cole slaw, bread, jelly, and a
cherry cobbler for dessert. We en
joyed hearing of his trip through
Europe this past summer.
All through the dry summer
I’ve been carrying one sprinkling
can of water to a few plants every
other day. One plant was a gift of
a small butterfly bush. Another
was a tiny azalea plant from
Georgia. Still another that got
watered was a large parsley
plant. And, I’ve planted blue
morning glory plants next to a
crab apple tree so that they can
climb up its trunk. I’m really
hoping they will bloom before too
cold weather comes our way.

ANSWER - A reader
from the central part of the
state is looking for two
pieces of discontinued
Tupperware. Shirley Orfa
nella, Quarryville, writes
that replacements can be
ordered through Cathy
Brown, 30 Little Britain Rd.,
Nottingham, PA 19362 or
call (717) 529-2572.
ANSWER - A reader re
quested instructions on
how to dry flowers in the
microwave. Thanks to Shir
ley Orfanella, Quarryville,
for sending in instructions,
but she writes that of the 5
or 6 drying methods she
uses, the microwave is her
least favorite but it’s fast.
Perhaps Shirley could send
instructions for her favorite
methods. Here is the mi
crowave instructions:
Cover the turntable with
kitchen paper and arrange
flowers in a single layer
making sure no two items
touch. Process on low
about 3 minutes. Time Will
depend on type of flowers
and micro wattage. Check
ever 30 seconds near end
of time. Remove when
crisp. A few seconds too
long will make them too
brittle. Best to experiment
with your least favorites.
