HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) Two hundred and fifty
four Guernseys competed in the
recent National Guernsey Show
at the Farm Show Complex in
Harrisburg. The event was con
ducted as part of the All-Ameri
can Dairy Show.
“It’s been a tremendous show,”
said Judge Dennis Ferguson,
Dryden, N.Y. “Probably as good
of a Guernsey show as I’ve seen.”
A cow raised in Texas and
owned by John and Bonnie
Ayars, Land of Living Farm, Me
chanicsburg, Ohio, came to the
top of the large show to be named
grand champion. Lavon Farms
Turn Point Layla is a senior
3-year-old.
The cow was an All-American
2-year-old last year and this year*
was grand champion at Ohio
State Fair, the only place she has
been show so far, according to
Ayars.
The cow will not get to com
pete at the World Dairy Expo in
Madison, Wis., however, because
Ayars was planning to judge the
Guernsey show at the event.
Clay Smith’s homebred OCS
Dairy Queenie, from OCS Dairy,
Jefferson, Md., won reserve
grand champion placing.
The cow, a 4-year-old, took

of the open and youth shows.
Judge Steve Hendress believed
the animal to have “the best
udder of the show.” In addition
her “strength up front,” put
“Wisper” at the top of the show.
Jami Savage-Hartman, Knox
ville, Md., took home reserve
grand champion and reserve in
termediate champion placing
with senior 3-year-old Savage-
Leigh Tipster-ET.
The cow’s “dairy strength,
shapeliness of udder, and sound
enough crease,” helped put her in
reserve champion placing,
according to judge Hendress.
The homebred comes from a
predominantly-Holstein herd.
Chip and Jami Savage-Hart
man also exhibited the reserve
senior champion, G S FLJ Tippy.
Senior champion winner was

USDA Announces $3O Million Pork Purchase
WASHINGTON, D.C. Secretary of Agriculture Ann M. Vene
man announced recentlythat the U.S. Department of Agriculture will
purchase up to $3O million of pork products for use in school feeding
and nutrition programs.
“These purchases will provide a boost to pork producers who have
experienced tough economic conditions this year,” said Veneman.
USDA has already purchased 13.8 million pounds of pork products
this school year and Monday’s announcement could bring the total up
to 66 million pounds of fresh and processed pork products. This is
compared to 29.9 million pounds for the 2001-2002 school year and
22.8 million pounds in 2000-2001.
