eign country when you attend some
of the pricier antique shows you
aren’t alone.
Many dealers seem to have a new
language to describe just about ev
erything. When you for instance in
quire about what appears to be a
French writing desk with gilt metal
trim, his reply could be, “Isn’t it a
wonderful bureau plat with that or
molu trim?”
Moving on, you ask a silver deal
er if he has any unusual small
pieces. “Would you like a caddy
spoon?” he asked.
You thought he was joking and
probably answered, “I don’t golf.”

course correct for the items, but un
less you know the language of an
tiquese they can be confusing.
CLUES: What’s so important
about knowing antiques and col
lectibles terms anyway? For one
thing it separates the beginner from
the knowledgeable collector. When
you break down the language bar
rier, the dealer knows you must
have an idea about the quality and
authenticity of the item. He is less
likely to try and palm off a married
piece (the addition of parts that
weren’t original to the piece).
Then there’s the snobbish point
