UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) Agriculture is one of the
most hazardous occupations in
the United States. The National
Safety Council reports that in
2001, 700 people working in agri
culture died and 130,000 more
sustained disabling injuries.
Many of these deaths and injuries
resulted from incidents involving
farm machinery that was being
operated on public roadways.
National Farm Safety and
Health Week (NFSH) is Sept.
15-21. The theme and accompa
nying materials, “National Farm
Safety and Health Week... Not
Just for Farmers Anymore,” are
designed to heighten awareness
among both the agricultural com
munity and the general public of
the dangers posed by operating
farm machinery on public road
ways.
