Club 4-H Fair Show Northampton County 4-H took place Aug. 10 at the 4-H At Camp Shehaqua Center Exhibition building with One of the sizzling events for 4-H’ers this summer was 4-H camp at Camp Shehaqua in the Poconos. Each year, Northamp ton County 4-H members may choose to spend a week at Hicko ry Run State Park in the Poco nos. The 4-H camp is used by 30 county 4-H programs. This year, Northampton Coun ty had 25 campers and four counselors at Camp Shehaqua. They experienced nature first hand by seeing bears, turkeys, a fox, and thunderstorms, to name a few. Camping with Northampton County also are Lehigh, Schuyl kill, and Carbon counties. 4-H campers select a morning workshop during which they complete a 4-H project. The morning workshops that campers could choose from include World Traveler, Paul Runyon’s Forest ry, Feathered Friends, and Sci encing with Snails. E)uring the afternoons, they could hike to the lake, try the low-ropes course, swim in the pool, or explore nature through art. The champion Simmental female, above, was also chosen the supreme champion female at the South Mountain Fair Open Beef Show. GETTYSBURG (Adams Co.) The 80th South Mountain Fair Open Beef Show this year featured su preme female and male classes, which gave each breed a chance to earn top honors. She is the daughter of Brian and Ruth Baer whose sons, Jason and Philip were also in 4-H. Beth is a member of the York County 4-H Beef Club and the Glen Rock 4-H Community Club, where she has completed projects in foods and nutrition, cake decorating, counted cross stitch, candlemaking, rocketry, beadwork, stepping stones, teen leadership and many others. Over her 10-year tenure in 4-H, Beth has consistently en tered her steers and at least 10 other 4-H projects each year at the York Fair. Beth began exhibi ting at the York Fair when she was S-years-old. In addition, she has entered several of the York Fairs’ Special Foods contests, garnering third prize in the Sweet Team Treat Championship and second place in the senior divi sion of the Kids Cookie Contest. Currently, Beth is a freshman at York College of Pennsylvania and she works as a horticultural ist with Poplar Hollow Farm in Glenville. She is a member of the American Junior Angus Associa tion, Pennsylvania Junior Angus Association and Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association. Franklin County 4-H Beef Club Show It was a hot day for the annual Franklin County 4-H Baby Beef Clubs Market Steer Show at the Franklin County Fair. There were 17 exhibitors competing. Colby Ferguson from Thurmont, Md., was the judge. Ferguson judged the exhibitors on their showmanship abilities in three different classes according to their age and their market steers in five different classes according to their weight. He shared positive and negative comments on how to improve their techniques. Kevin Stahl of Mercersburg was chosen as the champion showman. Nicholas Wingert of St. Thomas showed the grand 4-H HAPPENINGS Susquehanna County Youths Receive Memorial Award The family of Guy Wells has established a memorial award to be given at the Harford Fair dur ing the Red and White Youth Dairy Show. Exhibitors of the Red and White champions re ceived embroidered fleece blan kets or a framed Red and White Bonnie Mohr print. The junior champion was Hunsinger Sunset Ruby-Red owned and exhibited by Kaitlyn Depew, daughter of David and Annette Depew, Springville. Kaitlyn enjoys spending time at Byron and Pat Hunsinger’s where she keeps her show calf. Abbey Puzo, daughter of Mary and Doug Puzo of Montrose re ceived the junior reserve champi on award showing her spring yearling Goff Farms Sabrebeny- Red. Abbey is a Susquehanna County dairy ambassador and a member of the Watrous Comers 4-H Club. Abbey has been show ing cows since she was 4 years old. Abbey has shown Jerseys, Holsteins and Red and White Holsteins. Shana Mack’s senior 2-year-old O-Mac Oakes Hot Amber-Red was the senior cham pion. Daughter of Dean and Jane Mack, Shana lives near Brooklyn and is a member of the Bora to Show 4-H Club. She has served as dairy maid and a dairy ambas sador in Susquehanna County and has been exhibiting dairy an imals in 4-H and at the Harford Fair for seven years. Goff Farms Aubrey-Red champion steer. Lindsay Upper man of Chambersburg showed the reserve champion steer in the 4-H division. In the open divi sion, Nicholas Wingert showed the grand champion steer. Chester County 4-H Benefit Auction An auction to benefit the Chester County 4-H program take place rain or shine, Satur day, Sept. 28 at the Romano 4-H Center located on Route 322 in Honey Brook. The silent auction will begin at 3 p.m., followed by a live auction at 6 p.m. Various items for auction will include gift certificates from local businesses and restaurants, ad mission tickets to area' attrac tions, specialty gift baskets, as sorted pet foods, plants, quilts, artwork, antiques, and collecti bles. Auction proceeds will help raise funds needed to expand the Romano 4-H Center.
