A 148-acre grain farm in Gratz was honored as a Century Farm Tuesday evening during special ceremonies here at the Gratz Fair. Romaine Boyer-Macht and husband William, at left, were honored by Sam Hayes Jr., state secretary of agriculture, right. Romaine noted that John Jacob Moyer purchased the farmland on June 19, 1800, building a house in 1810. The Moyer family has lived in a log home on the property since 1840. The farm, once a dairy, is home to 125 tillable acres of corn and soybeans. Photo by Andy Andrews, editor Winter yearling: 1. Jennifer E Zlnn. 2. Jamie Welsh. GUERNSEY Winter yearling; 1. GRAND CHAMPION AYRSHIRE Jamie Welsh RESERVE GRAND At the Solanco Fair, Scott Wright, judge, selects the grand champion market lamb shown by Miriam Henry, left, and the reserve shown by Kelsey Binkley. Novice Wins Big At Solanco Sheep Show LOU ANN GOOD Food And Family Features Editor QUARRYVILLE (Lancaster Co.) “Beginner’s luck,” 10-year-old Miriam Henry said of capturing the grand champion market lamb title in her first year of showing. Chet Hughes, Lancaster 4-H livestock agent, disagreed with Miriam’s modest assessment. He told her, “It’s a great sheep, and you did a good job in raising it.” Of the 62 sheep shown by 36 exhibitors at the Solanco Fair on Wednesday, Miriam’s sheep was most impressive, according to Scott Wright, sheep judge. “It’s a nice complete lamb powerful, plenty of thickness, and handled well over the ribs.” Miriam, the daughter of Tom and Martha Henry of Holtwood, said the lamb was purchased from Fleeners of Robesonia. “Peter is a really friendly lamb. I walk him a mile a day, but he doesn’t like me to lead him. He always wants to be first,” she said of Peter’s rambunctious antics in the ring. Senior champion Jersey: Aaron Horst. The reserve grand champion market lamb was a heavyweight shown by Kelsey Binkley, 12. The same lamb, purchased from G&G Lambs, had been selected grand champion at the 4-H roundup. Although the lamb carries the name “Four-Wheel Drive,” he is very docile. “He is very tame. He’ll just lay his head on my leg and stay still,” Kelsey said. “He learned to know me very well, because I feed him twice a day, and run, walk, and set him up every day.” Kelsey, the daughter of Van and Beth Binkley, Conestoga, said the family raises 52 sheep, made up of Dorset and Suffolk breeds. When her lamb is sold at the Solanco Sale, Kelsey said she will shed some tears. “I’ll be sad, but this is my fourth year in showing. It isn’t as bad as it used to be, because I know selling them is just part of it,” Kelsey said. Here is a partial listing of re sults: Reserve senior champion Jersey: Aaron Horst.
