Report Supplied By USD A Friday, September 20,2002 THIS WEEK LAST WEEK LAST YEAR Compared to last week, slaughter steers began the week trading steady to weak, only to trade .SO-LOO higher to end the trading period. Holstein steers followed the same pattern, kick ing off the week with a weaker undertone, trad ing with a firmer undertone late in the week on improved quality. A slaughter heifer trend was not established due to low receipts. Slaughter cows sold .50- 1.00 lower early in the week; however losses were recouped late in the week as cows sold .50-1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold mostly steady to instances 1.00 higher on fairly good runs. The slaughter steer supply this week ranged from plain to fancy, with bidding relatively active on all types. Both Tuesday's and Thursday's supply included some very high quality stock, where bidding was vety active as buyers fought to own them. Leaner type cows continue to flood the cow markets; fortunately demand is as good as the supply, as bidding is still fairly active. The direct feedyards are lined up to put another dollar on their finished cattle this week. Early sales in the Southern Plains show steers and heifers trading 1.00 higher at 67.00. Dressed sales were not established as of Friday morning, although early sales indicate a firmer undertone. Cattle producers are starting to get some spring back in their step as the cur rent market seems to have some positive out look for the future. Boxed beef values continue to be on the rise, with live cattle futures at the CME in and out of the 70 dollar range all week. This weeks supply included 36 percent stters, 4 percent heifers, 39 percent cows, 9 percent bulls, with the balance feeders.
