PDMP To Present Nutrient Management Tips
MARTINSBURG (Blair Co.) The Kulp Family
Dairy, Inc., and the Professional Dairy Managers of
Pennsylvania (PDMP) invite dairy producers and ad
visors to attend “Balancing Act” Reality and Re
sponsibilities of Nutrient Management, a PDMP
Membership Meeting to be conducted at the dairy and
at Morrison’s Cove Memorial Park on Oct. 10.
Phil Kulp, partner in the 1,300-cow dairy, will talk
about his component system, stewardship, and com
munity relations. Phil admits the learning curve is
steep, “I can’t possibly know all the regulations and I
don’t know everything about managing the separate
components,” he said.
Phil’s nutrient management advisors, Bill Fink with
TeamAg, Marty Campfield from Nutrient Solutions,
Inc., and Steve Shaw from Cargill will be speaking
about how the Kulps are implementing regulations,
collecting and utilizing data, and testing phosphorus
based feeding. Alyssa Dodd, Agricultural Environ
mental Policy expert from Penn State Cooperative
Extension, will help dairy producers sort through the
regulations and offer resources.
The cost for this meeting is $lO for PDMP members
and $5O for non-members. The program runs from
8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch is included. Contact

Milking Robots
Whether new or existing, housing facilities for use
with milking robots must promote clean comfortable
cows with a desire to walk and visit the robot. Cows
with mobility problems or dirty cows will seriously
impact the productivity of the robot. Robot location
must also consider access for the operator and assure
that the environment around the milking side of the
robot is clean, well ventilated and free from flies.
Always consider flexibility for future changes such as
addition of more cows and robots or even removal of
the robot and installation of a conventional parlor.
Who knows what the future will bring?
