Dairy Entries Impress Judges At Plainfield Farmers’ Fair
DEANNA CONFER
Carbon Co. Correspondent
BANGOR (Northampton Co.)
The Plainfield Farmers’ Fair,
Bangor, was the site of the
Northampton County Open and
4-H Dairy Shows recently.
Judge Adam Sonnen of Son
nen Holsteins, a family owned
and operated dairy with 70 head
on test and a total herd of 140
near Richland, Lebanon County,
and a graduate of Morrisville
State University, N.Y., with a
dairy science degree reviewed the
near 70 entries of the open dairy
show.
Sonnen selected Savage-Leigh
Progress Sunee, the Sept. 2001
senior calf class winner of Bryant
Plainfield Farmers’ Fair reserve and champion colored
breeds of the open dairy show. From left: Samantha Don
lan, Bangor, with the reserve senior and reserve champi
on; Brian Kromer with the champion senior and champi
on; Jennifer Hower, fair queen; and Adam Sonnen, judge.
Both animals are owned by Kromer, Easton.
Hlavaty as his junior champion
in the Holstein competition. Re
serve champion honors went to
the Dec. 2000 Intermediate Year
ling entry of Margaret Seipt,
Keystone Bond Maggie.
The senior 3-year-old entry.
Keystone Padre Leigh, a Dec.
1998 daughter of Keystone Juror
Padre and Keystone Luke Leah,
also owned by Hlavaty was then
tapped as Judge Sonnen’s choice
for senior champion of the Hol
stein show. Sonnen said you had
to love the udder and dairy char
acter of this animal.
The reserve senior champion
title went to Keystone Farm’s
Nov. 1997 entry from the
4-year-old class, Pequest-Valley
Emory Lee.
In the open colored breed
show, Sonnen selected the Jan.
2002 Jersey entry of Stacy Brew
er from the intermediate calf
class as his junior champion col
ored breed.
Reserve champion colored
breed honors went to Stephanie
Brewer’s Jersey entry, Brew-Line
Berretta Diamond.

Northampton County 4-H Dairy Round-Up. From left:

champion; Krissa Brewer with the champion; and Plain
field Farmers’ Fair queen, Jennifer Hower.
The senior champion and re
serve champion colored breed ti
tles went to the entries of Brian
Kromer, Easton.
Senior and champion colored
breed honors went to Kromer’s
Prosper Jester Misty. The Sept.
1993 aged cow class winner is no
stranger to the winners circle and
was described by the judge as a
real fine cow that at 9 years old
has held together well he espe
cially liked her style and balance.
This cow was also part of the sec
ond place produce of dam class
and part of the first place dam
and daughter class. These group
classes included competition of
all breeds in consideration for the
winner’s spot.
The reserve senior and reserve
colored breed title went to Kram
er’s June 1998 4-year-old entry,
BDK Berretta Marble.
The cow in milk (best udder)
title went to Hlavaty’s grand
champion from the Holstein
show.
The next morning Jarrod Bur
leigh judged the Northampton
County 4-H Round-Up. Burleigh,
a 2001 graduate of Delaware Val
ley College with a dairy science
major, is currently a nutritionist
dealing with the dairy industry.
Burleigh and his wife own and
operate Scarlet Summer Hol
steins near Muncy.
The show started with the fit
ting and showmanship competi
tion where Burleigh selected
Amanda Fehnel, winner of the
intermediate class, being named
the champion fitter and Stepha
nie Brewer, the second place win
ner of the intermediate class
moving into the reserve champi
on fitter spot. First and second
place winners of the senior show
manship class, Charlene Barlieb
and Jim Kromer, respectively,
were Burleigh’s choice for cham
pion and reserve champion show
man titles.
Fehnel, 12, of Easton, will be in
the seventh grade at Shawnee
Middle School. Fehnel said her
favorite part of the dairy project
is showing her animals in the
ring. Reserve fitter Stephanie
Brewer, 11, will be in sixth grade
at DeFranco Elementary. Brewer
brought seven of her nine owned
animals to the fair.
Champion showman, Charlene
Barlieb, of Juniperdale Farm, is a
10th grade student at Pen Argyl
High School where she is active
in several school activities. Re
serve champion showman, Jim
Kromer, 17, also of Easton, will
be a junior at Bangor High
School.
Moving into the breed compe
tition Judge Burleigh selected the
March 2001 winner of the junior
yearling class owned by Timothy
Seipt as his junior champion of
the Holstein show. Burleigh de
scribed the cow as an animal
with all the style she needs and
will be the entry to go the fur
thest when she gets to the 4-H
district shows. The dam of this
entry was the senior and grand
champion Holstein of last year’s
open and 4-H dairy shows at the
fair.
The reserve junior champion
ribbon went to Kirbyville-J Mizer
Pammy, the homebred entry of
Jeremy Smith. Smith, 14, of
Northampton will be a ninth
grade student at Northampton
High School.
The senior champion and
champion Holstein winner was
described by the judge as being a
real flashy nice heifer and one
that “does it all.” The March

grade at Lehigh Valley Seventh
Day Adventist School and is in
his third year of 4-H. Seipt, of
Keystone Farm, said the best part
of showing is working with the
calves.
Reserve senior champion and
reserve champion Holstein hon
ors went to the Sept. 1999 Juni
perdale Lil Bo Peep, winner of
the senior 2-year-old class owned
by Charlene Barlieb.
Moving onto the colored breed
4-H show Burleigh selected the
owner-bred April 2002 Brown
Swiss entry of Barlieb as his jun
ior champion. Reserve junior
champion honors of the colored
breeds went to the owner-bred
