The Fourth Annual Maryland Commodity Classic, slated for Thursday, July 2S, starting at 11 a.m., at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friend ship, is expected to attract farmers from across the state interested in developing new markets for their product. The event is a joint effort between the Maryland Grain Producers Association (MGPA) and the Maryland Soybean Board (MSB). “We anticipate a large crowd at the 2002 Classic be cause of the increased interest in the numerous changes Mar yland’s grain producers have faced over the course of this past year,” said Jamie Jamison of Dickerson. “From the col lapse of the Port of Baltimore that has forever impacted the exporting of our agricultural products to the anticipated construction of ethanol plants designed to broaden the mar keting opportunities for grain producers, the Classic will cover those topics important to our growers.” Highlighting this year’s Md., lowa Youths Win Dairy Jeopardy Contest At Holstein Convention ATLANTIC CITY, NJ. Daniel Stewart of Oelwein, lowa, and Curtis Rboderick of Mt. Airy, Md., took top honors at the National Holstein Con vention in the Third Annual Dairy Jeopardy Contest of the Holstein Foundation. Fifty-two youths between the ages of 9 and 13 competed in the contest, which included junior and intermediate divi sions. In the junior division, Stew art captured the championship over second place winner Christopher Potts of Purcel- Iville, Va. Elizabeth Leonard from Midland, Va., finished third. Rhoderick won the interme diate division, edging out Anna Troester Gamavillo, lowa, a close second. Emily Lyons, Rockford, 111., finished third. Plaques for the first, second, and third place win ners were presented by Holstein Foundation. The panel will feature representa tives from surrounding states who will openly discuss oppor tunities for ethanol production and marketing in their areas. These panelists include: Dan Wolf of Grain Processors for Renewable Energy in Pennsyl vania, Ed Stahl of Garden State Ethanol in New Jersey, and Robert Hutchinson of Mid- Atlantic BioFuels located in Maryland. Ethanol is an important product for both Maryland grain producers and consum ers. It is an alcohol made from fermented com or other plants high in sugar and cellulose that has proven to be environ mentally friendly. “As we continue to be for ward-thinking, it is imperative that we move forward on promoting ethanol use and production in Maryland,” said Jamison. “Through discussing the avenues and markets avail able with our neighboring states, we can better serve the consumers’ wants and needs in the realm of environmentally program was developed in 2000 to create opportunities for younger children to hone their dairy knowledge through study and preparation for the con test. Dairy Jeopardy also makes it possible for individual youth to compete from small dairy states, where the popula tion may not be large enough to field Dairy Bowl teams. Contestants compete individu ally, answering questions relat ed to the dairy industry. Virginia volunteer youth leaders Carol McComb and Andrew and Karen McClellan Lancaster Farming has scheduled a special promo tional issue, Aug. 17, of Penn State’s Ag Progress Days 2002. The event is scheduled Aug. 20-22 in Rockspring.
