Somerset County Dairy Princess

SOMERSET (Somerset Co.)
Jessica Landis, a junior at Berlin
Brothersvalley High School in
Somerset County, is the newly
crowned Somerset County Dairy
Princess.
She is the daughter of Robert
and Teresa Landis of Cumber
land Highway, Berlin. Her grand
parents, Bill and Vera Landis
and her Uncle Terry Landis, own
and operate Hillside Farm near
Berlin, where Jessica cares for 20
dairy animals of her own.
“I am looking forward to this
coming year and going places in
order to promote the dairy indus
try,” said Jessica. “My plans are
to promote dairy to schools,
farms, 4-H groups, and other or
ganizations.”
Jessica serves as the president
of Valley 4-H and has been a
member there for 11 years. Since
she was nine years old, Jessica
has shown dairy animals at the
Somerset County Fair in Meyer
sdale.
Jessica is enrolled in the col
lege preparatory course. Some of
her school activities include
marching band, soccer, and Stu
dents Against Destructive Deci
sions (SADD).
She also is actively involved
with bell choir, Sunday school,
and Bible School at her church,
Berlin Brethren Church, and as a
camp counselor and teacher at
Camp Peniel, a church camp.
She also volunteers on a regu
lar basis with a local nursing
home facility in Meyersdale
called Beverly Healthcare.
She is active with County

ny, held at the Berlin Borough
Budding, Jessica was officially
crowned by last year’s queen,
Jennifer Stahl of Somerset.
She was attended by her court,
dairy maids Auda Will, Justine
Lehman, Katlyn Pribelsky, Victo
ria Castro, Erin Landis, and Ash
ley Pribelsky; and Little Miss par
ticipants Janna Shober, Paige
Stahl and Amber Wilk; and Little
Miss Escorts, Caleb and Issac

Jennifer Stahl, a 2001 Somer
set High School graduate, will at
tend Allegany College 'of Mary
land (ACM), a community
college in Somerset this fall.
During the coronation, Jenni
fer thanked her family members
as well as the local dairy farmers.
“I would like to thank all the
dairy farmers for the opportunity
to serve as the 2001 Somerset
County Dairy Princess. I had a
really great time and met so
many new people,” said Jennifer.
“I want to wish the best to Jessi
ca. This year will be ‘busy’ to say
the least. If you ever need help,
just call.”

Lancaster County Dairy Princess Kari Martin is sur
rounded by 4-H club members and leaders who partici
pated in a county-wide clean up. They picked up 14 gar
bage bags of trash and two bags of recyclable materials.
Items found included a truck tire, an old flattened folding
table, three Venetian blinds, a muffler, and large
amounts of paper and plastic waste.

Dairy Princess, participated in
the community service project
when 4-H clubs throughout Lan
caster County chose a section of
roadway to clean up.
The county wide clean up took
place on Saturday, July 6, with
Penn DOT supplying all the nec
essary equipment.
The Cows-R-Us 4-H Club of
the Denver area participated,
choosing Spur Rd., the access
road to exit 21 of the PA Turn
pike, as their area to beautify.
After about an hour and a half
of work club members including
Stephanie Martin, Kari’s sister;
Scott, Stephanie, Toni, and Terri
Kauffman and mom Ann Kauff
man; Andrew and Brian Smith,
sister Elizabeth Ackerman, and
mom Dale Smith; had collected
more than 14 garbage bags of
trash and 2 bags of recyclable
materials. Items found included a

Kari commented that the
cleanup was a lot of fun and it
felt good to be helping the com
munity.
Afterward Kari presented her
speech at an impromptu hot dog
barbeque. She then helped serve
make-your-own ice cream sun
daes for dessert.
A recipe for homemade Choco
late Praline Topping, served as a
sundae topping, follows.
CHOCOLATE PRALINE ICE
CREAM
Topping;
1 cup whipping cream
2 A cup packed brown sugar
2 A cup butter
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet
chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans
Ice cream
In a saucepan over medium
heat, bring cream, brown sugar
and butter to a boil; stirring con
stantly. Reduce heat; simmer for
2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove form the heat; stir in the
chocolate chips until melted and
smooth. Stir in pecans. Serve
warm over ice cream. Store in the
refrigerator. Yield: 3 cups.
