(Continued from Page A 2) roman candle into a dud. Last week, fat cattle prices continued their advance and feeder buyers were busy filling empty pens for an optimistic fall market. Several factors came together to extinguish the fireworks that some thought might carry us through the summer. Last Friday’s cattle-on-feed report seemed to start the downward slide, al though numbers were 3 percent less than last year. This week, com futures opened the week sharply higher on reports of scorching hot weather across the Midwest and that fear of higher feed costs pres sured yearling prices. Beef sales slowed as we approach the holiday week and outlets have already stocked their inventories for the expected grilling demand. Also, cattle feeders were forced to take less money and orders for feedlot replacements were hard to come by. Several areas continue to be extremely dry and now the near 100 degree temper atures have set-in to make conditions worse. Timing was less than ideal for Su perior Video to conduct a four-day auc tion with over 150,000 head on offer.. Many of these cattle are for fall delivery and may set the tone for several months. Many producers in Colorado, Wyoming, and across South Dakota continue to have both their feeder cattle and replace ments forced off pasture due to drought. The Independence Day celebrations in these areas won’t include bottle rockets, but hopefully these folks can find other ways to display their patriotism. All of us here at USDA Livestock & Grain Market News wish all of you a Happy 4th of July (maybe just a little more special this year). Lancaster County Weekly Cattle New Holland, Pa.
