ANSWER In answer to
the request about the Walck
grain cradle, Bonnie Shoci"!/,
president of Allison-Antrim
Museum, Greencastle, sent
the following information: The
grain cradle was made by
Henry Stickell Walck in his
shop at Canebrake (not even
of village size) about two miles
east of Greencastle off the
Leitersburg Pike. Walck made
cradles from 1663-1926. The
business was sold to a Mr.
Lesher in 1926 who operated
the business until 1939. In the
early 1980 s, Lesher’s son, Ira,
gave all the Walck grain cradle
manufacturing equipment to
Tayamentasachta, Center for
Environmental Studies, which
is part of the Greencastle-An
trim School District.
The grain cradle was used
to cut fields of wheat. An ex
perienced person could cut a
couple of acres of grain a day
with the grain cradle. Walck
also made hay rakes and hay
forks.
More information, including
an interview with H.S. Walck
with one of his granddaugh
ters, Virginia Fitz, can be
found on Allison-Antrim Muse
um’s Web site at www.green
castlemuseum.org.
ANSWER - Kitty Legge, Ul
ster, wanted to know how to
obtain a penpal from Scotland.
Bonnie Shockey, Greencastle,
suggests she contact some
one at the Ulster Historical
Foundation. Bonnie believes
that Kitty’s hometown Ulster,
Pa., was more than likely set
tled by the Ulster Scots (Scot
irish) who immigrated from
Northern Ireland. They were
not Irish but descendants of
the Scots, who were enticed
to move to Northern Ireland by
King James I in the early 17th
century. The Scots were of the
Presbyterian faith. Although
Kitty said that she does not
have a computer, she can ask
someone to help her use the
computer at a local library and
through that contact the Ul
ster Historical Foundation at
www.uhf.org.uk. More inform
ation on the Ulster Scots can
also be found at the Web site
www.greencastlemuseum.org.
