Pennsylvania’s State Board Preserves 35 Additional Farms HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Building on the nation’s number one state farmland pres ervation initiative, Pennsylva nia’s State Farmland Preserva tion Board approved 35 additional farms totaling 3,007 acres. Since 1989, Pennsylvania has now preserved 1,910 farms total ing nearly 229,000 acres includ ing 125 new farms totaling 13,675 acres since the launch of its “2002 farms in 2002” initiative earlier this year. “Our farmland preservation achievements in recent years have been remarkable examples of teamwork on the part of each county and the state’s Bureau of Farmland Preservation,” Agri culture Secretary Sam Hayes Expo Features Environmental Resources For Pork Production DES MOINES, IA Pork pro ducers can discuss innovative en vironmental management and regulatory programs with spe cialists at the Pork Checkoff funded Environmental Education Center at World Pork Expo June 6-8 at the lowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. “This will be an excellent op portunity for pork producers to obtain environmental informa tion, valuable in the day-to-day and future planning of their op eration,” said Max Schmidt, a pork producer from Elma, lowa, and chairman of the Pork Check offs Environment Committee. The Environmental Education Center will have exhibits that represent the Pork Checkoff funded programs, including the Odor Solutions Initiative (OSI), the Environmental Assurance Program (EAP), and the Envi ronmental Stewards Award pro gram. Environmental Stewards Award winners will talk about their environmental practices. Technical experts and informa tion from universities, extension, USDA-ARS, and conservation groups also will be available. Producers can find answers to questions related to environ mental management. Experts will be available to an swer questions regarding diet ma nipulation to reduce manure nutrients and odor emissions, treat ment technologies being evaluated for re duction of odors, in formation needed for a proper comprehensive nutrient management plan (CNMP), the eco nomics of some of these new technologies or management prac tices, and how concen trated animal feeding operation (CAFO) reg ulations may affect them. The common wealth purchases the develop ment rights, referred to as easements, to preserve Pennsyl vania’s prime farmland and open space.
