was bom She grew up to become the suffragette and
American reformer Amelia Jenks Bloomer, who pop
ularized the balloon-legged outfit—bloomers In her
travels, she adopted the three-quarter-length skirls and
Turkish-style trousers that she saw other women wear
and she promoted then versatility in

women's issues, of which she was
the editor A general outcry fol
lowed. with many calling the new
style “indecent ” fashions barely
changed, but bicyclists, horseback
riders, and bathers took up the cos
tume, which has continued to be
called by her name
