Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser In looking for one thing, I found another thing. It is an old school book that my grandmoth er used in Rupp’s School in 1864 she was 10-years-old. This manual of “Geography Combined with History and As tronomy” was published in 1862. Most of the book is written in question and answer form. Roman numerals are used to mark the 138 lessons. I noticed The STREAM MAP OF PENNSYLVANIA was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. The map is known as the LOST STREAM MAP to some anglers. Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstakingly plotted by hand the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 by 5 foot map. The map sold extremely well—until it was lost several years later. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to a landfill. The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $4OO for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. Experts told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day.” that Canada is called “British America.” Almost every page has an unusual picture of a foreign country. My knowledge of geography is not very good, but I’ve always liked the subject. When I told a lady, several years ago, that I was going to Hawaii she asked me if I was driving there. She must have missed one of her geography les sons. The accuracy, it's unbelievable.” —Victor Blauch Over the years I’ve accumulat ed a lot of very nice magazines. The problem is what to do with them. Some of them can be used by a retirement home nearby. Others, I fear, must be thrown away. Everyday I gather asparagus and then freeze some. During hot weather it grows rapidly but on cold and rainy days there is little to cut. I’ve had to cover some plants in the evening and I’m hoping for warmer weather. Despite the weather, the weeds grow just fine, and 1 have filled several wheelbarrow loads with them. They grow around the row of peony bushes and under the rhubarb. Even the grass under the mailbox, that the lawn mower cannot reach, has to be clipped. The dwarf white and pink tulips there bloomed very nicely this year. Each year I look forward to the forget-me-not blooming too. Ohio State University ento mologists have documented large numbers of Asian lady beetles feeding on peaches, grapes, and apples, but whether the damage found on the crops is caused pri marily by the insect, or by anoth er host has yet to be determined. “We’ve heard from field re ports that 25 percent of some of the peach crop was damaged this season due to something nibbling on the fruit. Originally we thought it might be grasshop pers,” said Kovach. “Then we started finding large numbers of lady beetles aggregating on dam aged and undamaged fruit and are questioning whether they could do this type of dam age.” The multi colored Asian lady beetle, although con sidered a pest because it tends to hone in on homes as overwinter ing sites, does Hawaii Farm Tour The Best Escorted Vacations You’ll Ever Find From $ 2144 P.P. Its diet restriction of insects, however, is what makes the lady beetle’s craving for nectar rather unusual. “There is some unique behav ioral shift going on that we don’t understand yet that is causing the lady beetle to change its feed ing preferences,” said Kovach. “Between September 1 and Octo ber, when it heads off to find overwintering sites, there is a drop-off in aphid feeding and the insect’s attraction to black light traps. They are interested in nei ther and seem to be going for the fruit.” If researchers’ speculations hold true, the news won’t bode well for fruit growers. “Peaches and grapes are at a greater risk because their soft skin is easily damaged,” said Kovach. “In grapes, it could really be a prob lem because people are detecting the chemical smell from the bee tles in wine.” The short time window that the lady beetles aggregate on the fruit is also a dilemma for grow ers who spray their orchards. “There are restrictions on certain pesticides that require one to wait several days after spraying before the fruit can be harvest ed,” said Kovach.
