Most hat box factories in the 19th century were located in large cities such as New York and Hartford. Designs were printed from woodblocks with inks in three or more colors. While the art is crude, they were planned for color. There were a wide range of designs from geometric and mythological patterns to floral and romantic scenes. Among the most expensive are those with scenes commemorat ing historical events and person alities of the time. Many done in Pennsylvania used tulip and bird motifs, identifying them as Penn sylvania Dutch. Another way to date them is when the art depicts historical events, such as the opening of the railroad, c. 1830. Designs , such as hunting scenes, document the interests and lifestyles of the era. Many historical figures and famous ho tels were also depicted. Others PUBLIC AUCTION 2ND ANNUAL TROXELVILLE SPRING SALE ANTIQUES - COLLECTIBLES FARM & GARDEN SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2002 9:00 A.M. Saturday, April 13, 2002-831 pictured methods of travel from paddleboats to sailing ships and steamships and railroads. Hat boxes were out of fashion by the mid-19th century with the end of stagecoach travel. Leather luggage replaced them to meet the rough handling of railroad and steamship travel. Hat boxes often come to Amer icana auctions held by galleries such as Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Skinner’s. It’s a good idea to check with them to see if hat boxes are included. One of the largest collections of hat boxes can be seen in the Coo per-Hewitt Museum in New York City. In the collection is the frag ment of an ad dating c. 1789, by John Fisher of Baltimore, found in a hat box belonging to Abigail Adams, for a wallpaper covered hat box. When hats largely went out of fashion in the 19605, hatboxes once more were sent to the attic. The hatboxes are very collectible these days. Look for the most in teresting designs and designer names. ■DEN Something For
