animal. They’re more in line
with the Angus, size-wise, so
they’re a little bigger, a little
higher, and you can really tell
the difference between the two.
“One reason that people like
Galloways is that they’re like
the Longhorns in that they do
very well on scrubby range,
they’re very efficient that way.
They’ll eat the stuff other breeds
won’t.”
Not only the ability to survive
on little food but also their pro
tective instinct has made them
popular in western states.
“Out west, they are used in
herds with sheep because they’re
very protective and they will
keep the coyotes and wolves
away from the sheep herds,” he
said.
“They’re much more protec
tive the first few days after calv
ing. If you wait a week, then you
can go out and thev are better,
“Basis Gold® has been the best
herbicide we have used for the
control of Johnsongrass in
corn. While our initial reason for
using Basis Gold® was for the
control of Johnsongrass we
found that with a Basis Gold®
and Clarity l tank mix we also
had excellent control of all our
weeds.”

but they’re very protective of
their young. We’ve learned to
keep our dog away from the
cows with calves the first couple
of days.”
Although the breed is built for
cold weather, they are found in
southern areas such as North
Carolina or Kentucky, states
which host Galloway shows.
Maine and New York also have
shows for the breed, said Brian.
According to information
from the U.S. Belted Galloway
Society, Staunton, Va., the cattle
are an old Scottish breed. “Bel
ties,” as they are commonly
called, can have a black, red, or
dun coat with the telltale white
band in the middle.

“I use Basis Gold® because it
works. I do custom work for
other farmers and I see what
works and what doesn’t. Basis
Gold® is a much better alterna
tive than using a Roundup
Ready 2 corn program. Basis
Gold® has given me the best
overall control for shattercane
and foxtail, along with excellent
Triazine resistant weed control.
It is also easy to use due to the
way the Basis Gold® is pack
aged. Basis Gold® is an eco
nomical way to control weeds
in my cornfields. This will be
my third year controlling weeds
with Basis Gold®."

tory indicates that they devel
oped during the 16th Century in
the former Galloway district of
Scotland. The hilly coastal area
dictated that only the hardiest
animals lived to reproduce.
Solid-colored Galloway cattle
are raised in the British Isles. It
remains a mystery, however,
when selective breeding of the
Belted variety of Galloway
began.
The U.S. Belted Galloway So
ciety notes that the breed proba
bly originated from a cross of
Black Galloways with Dutch
Belted cattle.
The white belt is a dominant
genetic trait. However solid
black calves have been born in
belted herds, and belted calves
have been born in Black Gallo
way herds.

“It works and it doesn’t have
to wait for a ram. I really like
that the activity is not all
weather related. It’s especially
nice that I don’t have to do all
the respraying of escapes that
I used to get. And the cost is
reasonable too.”
