NFU Urges Senate To
Enact Renewable Fuels Standard
has joined a broad coalition of
agriculture groups, renewable
fuel producers and organiza
tions concerned with the coun
try’s air quality in a recent letter
to the U.S. Senate urging enact
ment of a renewable fuels stan
dard (RFS).
According to NFU President
Leland Swenson, creating a RFS
would triple ethanol production
over the next decade by requir
ing that a small percentage of re
newable fuels, such as ethanol
and biodiesel, be blended into
motor fuels. Pending legislation
would increase renewable fuels
use from two billion gallons in
2003 to five billion gallons in
2012.
“The Renewable Fuels Stan
dard provides great opportuni
ties for farmers and consumers
by aiding the pursuit of sound
farm, environmental, security
and economic polices,” Swenson
said. “It will help increase
market prices for commodities,
