Breeders Elect Officers
LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.) Lancaster
County Holstein Breeders board of directors met
March 5 to elect new officers and assign commit
tees for the coming year.
Plans are under way for the County Black
and White Show to be conducted July 18 with
the 4-H show. Details will follow in the coming
months. This year a special invitation has been
extended to the Chester and York County Hol
stein Breeders to participate in our show.
The Pennsylvania Holstein Association will
have two heifer sales this year and is looking for
good cattle. The sale dates are April 26 and Aug.

If you are interested in consigning an animal,
contact Rick Hess, or David Lentz at the PHA
office. The sales will be conducted at the Hol
stein Farm in Middletown.

Dauphin Extension Opens
Harrisburg Satellite Office
DAUPHIN (Dauphin Co.) To improve its
service to Dauphin County families, Penn State
Cooperative Extension has opened a new satel
lite office in downtown Harrisburg in the County
Administrative Building at 2 S/Second St.
Resources available at the extension offices in
the Dauphin County Agriculture and Natural
Resources Center in Dauphin will be available
also at the satellite location. They include mater
ial on agriculture, home gardening, youth devel
opment projects, food and nutrition, healthy
home ideas, money management tips, parenting
skills information, and child care training and
information. A noon lecture series is bring
planned.
Master Gardeners will be available at the sat
ellite office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10
a.m.-2 p.m. to answer questions about trees,
flowers, lawn, garden, soil, insect or disease
problems, and other questions.
The office is open Monday through Friday, 10

Stunted Orchardgrass Seen
COLLEGE PARK, Md. Recent reports from var
ious parts of Maryland describe yellowed or brown
patches in orchardgrass, often circular in shape and
quite extensive throughout fields, according to Galen
Dively, University of Maryland entomology depart
ment.
Upon examination, plants are severely stunted and
actually appear to be dead above ground but the root
systems and crowns are still alive in most cases.
So far, two causal agents have been identified, in
cluding white grubs and winter grain mites. Aphids
also have been detected in affected fields, but the low
numbers present and absence of signs of past aphid
activity suggest that they probably are not the major
cause.
Other causal factors, such as plant diseases, have
not been ruled out, and it may turn out that a combi
nation of pest organisms and plant conditions are re
sponsible for the orchardgrass problems.
In any case, it is important to check damaged areas
in affected fields to try to link the injury to a particu
lar pest or pests.
Paul Craig, Penn State crop agent, also reported
several calls this week from Franklin County about
unidentified problems in orchard grass.
