Starting Your Own
Affordable Egg Collection
Just as Christmas ornaments
and objects have become highly
collectible, so too are Easter
items. Consider starting a collec
tion of 11th and 20th century
eggs, hens and bunnies.
Decorative eggs were made in
a wide range of objects and ma
terials including glass, tin, card
board, and paper. Victorian eggs
made of milk glass had painted
and gilded decorations.
Tin and cardboard eggs and
bunny figures, first made in the
early 20th century, once held
candy. These days they can
brighten kitchen decor year
round. Glass hen and egg dishes
originally made in the 19th cen
tury were in colors as well as
white and colorless glass.
Reproductions can be found at
antiques shops, shows, and gift
shops. Keep your eye out at ga
rage sales for the hollowed out,
decorated eggs that were a popu
lar craft beginning in the 19505.
