VIRGINVILLE (Berks Co.) The Berks County 4-H Dairy Program’s banquet took place re cently at the Virginville Grange Hall to honor 4-H’ers for their work in 2001. Two special awards were pres ented at the banquet. First, Kelly Rohrbach was presented with the Charles D. Care Memorial Award, or “Rookie of the Year” honor. Kelly, the winner of the 2001 Charles D. Care Memorial Award, is the daughter of Allen and Beth Rohrbach of Shoema kcrsville. She is a member of the Eastern Berks 4-H Dairy Club. She helped her club with the breakfast baskets and as a server for the senior citizens banquet. Charles D. Award 2002 recipient, Rebecca Dietrich of Bemville, award from 2001 recip ient Andrew Youse of Oley. Kelly and her family also hosted her club’s summer picnic at their farm. According to club leader Linda Youse, Kelly is a “great 4-H member who is hard work ing.” The Charles D. Care Memorial Award or “Rookie of the Year” honor encourages first- or sec ond-year 4-H dairy members to work hard and participate in their club activities. Charlie was a milk truck driver who always supported the 4-H Dairy Pro gram. Also recognized as “Rookie of the Year” finalists were Rebecca DeTurk and Samantha Johns. Rebecca, daughter of Dan and Denise DeTurk of Mohrsville, was nominated by Northern Berks 4-H Dairy Club. Saman tha, the daughter of Mark and Debra Johns of Richland, was nominated by Western Berks 4-H Dairy Club. They both were de serving of the recognition re ceived for all of their hard word they did in their clubs in 2001. Rebecca Dietrich, winner of the 2001 Joyce Miller 4-H Career Advancement Award, is the daughter of Thomas and Karen Dietrich of Bemville. Becky has been a very active 4-H member. She lists her top 4-H leadership experiences as counselor for four years at Camp Shehaqua 4-H Camp. Becky plans to use the award toward her books that she will need at college. She plans to attend Penn State to study ag riculture business management. She credits her 4-H dairy project for influencing her in the field of agriculture and to serve dairy farmers. The Joyce Miller 4-H Career Advancement Award was estab lished to recognize an outstand ing Berks County 4-H Dairy club member. Joyce was a dedicated 4-H leader who stressed hard work, service, apd achievement with her members. This award is given to 4-H members who are older than 17 and will use the award for higher education, ca reer training, or career invest ment. Project book awards were pres ented to Large herd Jason Rice (Northern Berks), Matthew Schantz (Eastern Berks), and Megan Schantz (Eastern Berks). Small herd Rebecca DeTurk (Northern Berks), George Brown (Eastern Berks), and Jesse Bitler (Eastern Berks). Judge for the project books was Jerry Johnson, a former Berks County 4-H par ent. Dairy herd journal awards were presented to Large herd Melissa Schuler (Eastern Berks). Jacob Rice (Northern Berks), and Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 30, 2002-813 Kristen Gross (Northern Berks). Small Herd Sandra Arigstadt (Eastern Berks), Jason Troutman (Northern Berks), and Keri Houp (Eastern Berks). The judge for the herd journals was Donna Hix, a former Berks County 4-H dairy leader. Officer book awards were pres ented to Secretary’s Book Brett Treichler, Eastern Berks; Trea surer’s Book Jason Troutman. Northern Berks; and Scrapbook Jason Rice, Northern Berks. 4-H Dairy Activity Book Awards were presented to Kelly Rohrbach (Eastern Berks), Na than Schantz (Eastern Berks), Pamela Werley (Northern Berks), Katherine DeTurk (Northern Berks), and Megan Schantz (Eastern Berks). The 2001 Berks County Dairy Roundup champions were also recognized during the banquet. They were Kara Brendlinger with her Ayrshire, David Satta zahn with his Brown Swiss, Na than Phillips with his Guernsey, Jason Troutman with his Hol stein, Megan Phillips with her Jersey, Kyle Kulp with his Line bach, Melissa Harper with her Milking Shorthorn, and Sarah Tuttle with her Red and White. Kristen Gross, 2001-2002 Berks County Dairy Princess, provided entertainment during the banquet. She performed her skit, entitled “Off to the Dentist.”
