Belleek Porcelain Not
Always Of Irish Origin
Collecting 19th century art porcelain such as
Belleek can be confusing for a beginner.
Usually it is thought of as being made in Ire
land and having a delicate, pearly, translucent
glaze and thinness. Other characteristics could be
twig-shaped handles, lattice work, and applied
floral and leaf designs. It is often reticulated (the
lattice work is pierced).
CLUES: It is a matter of knowing what clues to
look for. Let’s say you discover a beautiful bowl at
an estate side that looks like 19th century Belleek
but it lacks the traditional marks of the harp,
Irish wolfhound and Celtic round tower.
On the bottom it is marked li Lotusware,” Still,
it has the translucent look associated with Irish
Belleek and the body is thin. Research would
prove your bowl to be a late 19th century Ameri
can Belleek piece made by Knowles, Taylor &
Knowles in 1887, one of several manufacturers
who attempted to copy the eggshell translucence
of Irish Belleek. It was produced in East Liver
pool, Ohio. However, it was Ott & Brewer of
Trenton, New Jersey that are considered the fin
est makers of this type of porcelain. At a recent
Skinner auction, one of their Belleek bowls
fetched $1,057.50. Other makers include Willets,
Lenox and Ceramic Art Company.
Marks to look for are a circle with a crown and
the words “Lotusware” printed around the cir
cumference, for Knowles. Several marks were
used by the Ceramic Art Company: the CAC
monogram was used. Lenox used a green wreath.
Ott & Brewer used the word “Belleek” superim
posed of “O” and “B” as well as a crown with a
sword through it and “O” and “B” below and
“Bdelleek” above.
Use the Kovel’s New Dictionary of Marks
under the Belleek category for more help.
Pieces hand-painted by top artists have their
initials.
