FARMERSVILLE (Lancaster
Co.) For 46 years the Pennsyl
vania Relief Sale has been raising
money to help the needy of the
world. Last year proceeds result
ed in $457,875 being distributed
to the needy around the world.
This year, the event is scheduled
for April 5-6 at the Harrisburg
Farm Show budding, comer of
Cameron and Maclay Sts.,
Harrisburg.
Hundreds of people help by
donating items to be auctioned.
Some make quilts and crafts, host
meals for bid, or donate antiques.
The farming community is a
large part of the efforts that
make this sale so successful in
clothing the needy and feeding
the hungry in the name of Christ.
Each year for the past 22 years, a
heifer sale for world relief is con-
ducted at the New Holland Sales
Stables. This year the sale was
slated for March 20. Donations of
slaughter cows, steers, bulls,
hogs, calves, goats, hay, straw,
grain, and farm seeds are ac
cepted and auctioned to the high
est bidder. This past year, donors
could designate any slaughter an
imal to be sold with proceeds
channeled to world relief through
the Pennsylvania sale.

A popular event at the annual
sale, conducted the first Friday
evening and Saturday in April is
the country auction.
John and Esther Rutt have
been overseeing collecting items
for the country auction for many
years. Items include glassware,
dishes, crafts, pedal tractors
theme baskets, handcrafted fur
niture, coins, antiques, and more.
Donates Antiques, Collectibles,
Pennsylvania Relief Sale
Four-year-old Tori Rutt tries out one of the pedal tractors to be auctioned at the
Pennsylvania Relief Sale. Included in the Collector Edition Spirit tractors are models of
an Oliver, Cockshutt, Minneapolis-Moline, and Cockshutt. Other models to be auctioned
include a Massey-Harris 44 collector edition that can no longer be ordered, a John
Deere A, first die cast vintage pedal tractor ever produced, a Case pedal tractor, and a
collector edition IH Farmall M White demonstration pedal tractor.
Esther said that a new item
this year are the theme baskets.
These are baskets or containers
filled with an assortment of items
to fill a theme. One of those pre
pared by Esther is toy wheelbar
row filled with an assortment of
art supplies.
“I don’t know how many we
will end up with,” Esther said.
Lots of churches and individuals
are putting them together and
will bring them to Harrisburg or
Friday or Saturday.”
Theme baskets will be sold
Sat., 2 p.m.
Coins to be offered for sale at
11 a.m. on Saturday include 100
Kennedy half dollars and 50 sil
ver dollars. Gold coins include an
1899 $5, an 1886 $lO, and a 1891
and 1878, $2O piece.
Rutt said of interest to many
farmers and collectors is a 1951
Farmall Super A tractor with
plow.
The auction is also famous for
its vast collection of quilts mat
and donated by churches and i
dividuals. Esther said that m<
than 400 quilts are expected to
offered this year.
