Final Farm Bill Expected Early April

Farm Bill Conference issued a
joint statement Tuesday on a
budget funding agreement that
may make it possible to finish the
Farm Bill in time for this year’s
growing season.
The statement was issued by
Larry Combest (R-Texas), Con
ference Committee/House Agri
culture Committee chairman;
Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Senate
Agriculture, Nutrition and For
estry chairman; Charlie Sten
holm (D-Texas), House Agricul
ture Committee ranking member;
and Richard Lugar (R-Indiana),
Senate Agriculture Nutrition and
MOUNT JOY (Lancaster Co.)

nificant payments to producers in
12 Northeast states when fluid
milk prices fall below $16.94 per
hundredweight.
He also supports increased
funds for conservation programs,
and favors the $275,000 per farm
family commodity payment limit
found in the Senate bill. The
House Bill sets the payment limit
at $550,000.
The dairy program, conserva
tion funds, and payment limits
are especially important for
farmers in Pennsylvania, where
“we have a diverse agriculture,”
Holden said.
