nia congressman voted
against the House’s
version of the bill.
However, the Sen
ate’s version of the
farm bill directs pay
ments to be made to
dairy farmers when
the price for fluid milk
(bottled milk) drops
below $16.94 per CWT
($1.46 per gallon).
However, this only
represents 45 percent
of our local dairy
farmer’s milk. The
value of milk used for
manufacturing pur
poses is hovering
around $11.85 per
CWT ($1.02 per
gallon).
Dairy farmers have
to meet the same qual
ity standards for milk
used for manufactur
ing as they do for bot
tling. However, the
dairy farmers receive a
much lower price for
the milk used for man
ufacturing purposes
(roughly 55 percent).
Linda Broyan, a
dairy farmer from
Berwick, said, “The
Senate bill will not
correct many of the in
equities facing dairy
farmers, but the dairy
provisions are a step in
the right direction.”
The dairy provi
sions are only for 3Vi
years, but the provi
sions will give time to
develop the needed
legisla|ion. These pro
visions cover 12 north
eastern states. The
other 36 continental
states come under a
floor price plan for
manufactured milk.
Tewksbury said,
“The dairy provisions
in the Senate proposed
farm bill must pass.”
