March 8,2002 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL FEEDER CATTLE SUMMARY for week ending Mar. 8. Receipts: 157,800 head, last week 158,200, year ago 196,300. This week’s reported volume included 54 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Compared to last week; feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher, instances 3.00 to 5.00 higher, according to the USDA Livestock Market News Service The feeder market received strong support from the finished trade. Direct feedlot sales, slaughter steers and heif ers. 2.00 to 2.50 higher at 73.00-73.50 live and 4.00 higher in the beef at 116.00-117.00. Boxed beef cutouts up 3.00 with light Choice late in the week at 120.31. This helped packer margins. However, another week of meager cattle slaughter of only 637,000 head. April futures closed at 75.87 but June is down to 70.50. Continued drought conditions in many areas becoming more serious as we get nearer the spring grazing and planting season. The dry, very mild open winter made for a very good calving year, many 95 percent or better savings. Winter maintenance feeding was usually low and feedlot cattle made efficient daily gains instead of fighting the usual winter weather elements. Economists predicted the recession is drawing to a close and the Dow Jones up nearly 500 points for this week. Prospects for strong consumer beef demand improving.
