March I. 2(M12
Report Supplied By USDA
NATIONAL FEEDER CATTI.E
SUMMARY for week ending Mar. 1. Re
ceipts: 158.2(H) head, last week I9I.4IM):
scar ago 180.2(H). Reported solumc in
cluded 49 percent weighing over 6(H) lbs.
Compared to last week, feeder steers and
heifers over 7(H) lbs sold 1.00-3.00 lower in
slow trading. Calves and stockcr cattle
were mostly steady with good demand
from gra/c-out wheat and spring grass in
terests. However, southeastern auctions
experienced losses of up to 3.(M) on all
weights of feeder cattle and calves. Cooler
temperatures in the South reduced re
ceipts and made it hard fur order buyers
to put li>ads together, also the expected
winter weather on the Plains made cus
tomers hesitant to receive shipped-in cat
tle. Pressure on heavyweight feeders was
unmistakable near the major feeding
areas with ample supplies ready to come
oft wheat. Despite drv eonditions, weight
gams have been outstanding as the short
( Seedway tests conducted in 2000-2001 )
wheat had plenty of power. Many of these
cattle base yet to be contracted as produc
ers continue to reject lower country bids
Texas. Oklahoma, and Kansas auctions
arc expecting big receipts with so many
cattle still up for sale.
Current fccdlot placements wdl be
based off of June Live Cattle futures,
which arc nearly 5.00 lower than Aprd.
February contracts left the board this
week at 70.37. after tendering 777 loads
for delivery. Buyers arc determined to buy
feeders that will hedge for protection
amid uncertainty over the Johnson
Amendment that would outlaw packer
owning, feeding, or controlling livestock
any longer than 14 days prior to slaugh
ter. This is the latest of the government's
attempts to level the playing field and en
sure a future for independent livestock
producers, which follows mandatory re
porting and country of origin product la
beling. The Johnson Amendment appears
like a quick fix. on the surface, to the fear
of complete consolidation. Howcvci, the
ramifications of this law arc hard to pre
dict and may end up backfiring on pro
ducers.
One thing is for sure, a lot of big money
tv ill disappear from feeder and stockcr
cattle markets, as private feeders arc not
in the habit of buying cattle that arc sure
to lose money. Packer affiliated feeders
have more options and more interested in
making sure they have a steady supply of
finished livestock. However, many cow/
calf producers have already staled that
they arc willing to give up these record
calf prices to ensure a future for them and
their families. There is no doubt that if
this amendment becomes part of the new
Farm Bill it will be a major change to the
cattle industry, but the effect on the hog
industry will be twice as severe.
