A2O-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 23,2002 National Feeder Cattle Weekly Summary St. Joseph, Mo. February 15,2002 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL FEEDER CATTLE SUMMARY for week ending Feb 15 Re ceipts This week 187,400. last week 148,200, year ago 150,600 This week’s reported volume included 48 percent weighing over 600 lb Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers across most of the nation sold steady to 2 00 higher, according to the USDA Live stock Market News Service After almost tripling their receipts from last week, the Southeast states sold cattle firm to 3.00 higher, with some areas up to 4 00 higher. The Southeast was crippled by severe winter storms last week which included heavy ice Buyers were very active as producers were able to make it back into the auction barns Several markets in Tennessee offered preconditioned, load lots, and grouped cattle which found excellent demand as feeders under 600 pounds traded up to 6 00 higher The snow and ice has melted in the Southern Plains and given wheat pastures a long overdue drink. The Senate passed their version of a Farm Bill this week, which included a provision that would ban packers from owning cattle 14 days prior to slaughter The House’s version of the Bill did not include this provision, and the two must meet in a conference committee to hammer out the details If the Senate’s version were to pass it would no doubt shake the cattle feeding industry As with any Farm Bill there are producers on both sides of the fence, and cattle leeders are keeping their eyes glued to the issue Packers may need to add more money to their bids and procure cattle before today's COD report comes out Analysts are expecting to see larger marketing than a year ago, and smaller placements Dressed sales in the Northern yards as of Friday morning ranged from 114-115 00 which is 1 00 higher than last week. Cu touts continue to be good, and chain speeds have increased at the plants Most factors are stacking up in the feed er’s corner as consumer demand is strong, and break even sheets are look ing better evert week Metal Roofing & Siding A.
