Gelbvieh Honors Member Of The
Year, Hall Of Fame Inductees
DENVER, Colo. Each year
the American Gelbvieh Associa
tion honors those who laid the
solid foundation for the Ameri
can Gelbvieh Association and
those who continue to help Gelb
vieh grow.
The AGA Hall of Fame Award
honors a pioneer in the Gelbvieh
breed that made a lasting contri
bution. The 2002 AGA Hall of
Fame inductees were Fred and
Lee Kummerfeld of Santa Clar
ita, Calif., and formerly of the
101 Ranch of Moorcroft, Wyo.
The Kummerfelds were honored
during the AGA National Con

The Kummerfelds were active

American Angus Association Offers
Registration Number 14 Million
RENO, Nev. The American
Angus Association will offer reg
istration number 14000000 for
sale at live auction Sunday, April
21, during the Western National
Angus Futurity in Reno, Nev.
The auction will take place just
before the selection of grand
champion female during the
females in the Gelbvieh breed.
They promoted the new breed
through exhibiting at many state
fairs and regional farm shows.
Lee Kummerfeld helped to or
ganize the American Gelbvieh
Junior Association and assisted
in hosting many national junior
shows.
The Kummerfelds were forced
to leave their ranch in 1993 due
to failing health caused by an un
known source on the ranch. They
left behind a long history in the
cattle industry and their contri
butions to the Gelbvieh breed
were not forgotten.
The AGA Member of the Year
nominees come from state or re
gional associations to honor an
AGA member they feel has gone
above and beyond the call of
duty. Rick Soelzer .of Piedmont,
S.D., earned the AGA Member of
show, which is the 2002 National
Angus Show and a Roll of Victo
ry (ROV) super point show.
“We’re excited about offering
this truly unique registration
number at auction for any mem
ber to purchase,” says John
Crouch, interim executive vice
president for the American
the Year award and was honored
at a luncheon during the AGA
National Convention in Denver.
Rick Soelzer, along with his
wife Colleen, owns and operates
Piedmont Valley Gelbvieh in
western South Dakota. The
South Dakota Gelbvieh Associa
tion nominated Soelzer as AGA
Member of the Year. Soelzer has
served on many state and nation
al committees and served as
AGA President in 1998.
The South Dakota Gelbvieh
Association nominated Soelzer to
honor his leadership in hosting
the 2001 AGJA Black Hills Gold
Classic in Rapid City, S.D. As
the planning committee member
closest to the host site, Soelzer
took on additional responsibility
to coordinate sponsorships, work
with the Central States Fair staff
and arrange many other details.

The 2002 American Gelbvieh As
sociation Sire Summary is now
available to commercial and
seedstock cattle producers. This
year’s summary contains 1,136
Progeny Tested sires and 665 Ge
netic Indicator sires. The Univer

Gelbvieh National Cattle Evalua
tion twice per year.
New to this year’s sire sum
mary are two EPDs recently un
veiled by the American Gelbvieh
Association. The Grid Merit EPD
assigns a value to the carcass
traits that a sire passes to his
progeny.
With the Grid Merit EPD, per
formance is measured in a dollar
value associated with marketing
progeny on a value-based grid.
The Stayability EPD is a predic
tion of the ability of a cow to pro
duce a calf after the age of six.
Longevity in a cowherd is key to
covering the costs associated with
developing females and adding
them to your herd. Stayablity is
the best indicator currently avail
