Co.) Clover Hill Vineyards
and Winery, Breiningsville,
exhibited their expertise in
wine making by taking the
Best of Show Award at the
sixth annual Farm Show
Wine Competition at the
86th Pennsylvania Farm
Show.
Clover Hill’s Chambourein
gained gold medal status as
best hybrid, leading to a best
of show entry. In addition to
their Chambourein, Clover
Hill exhibited six other varie
ties of wine. They were
among more than 20 compet
ing wineries at this year’s
event, where 16 judges sam
pled 163 varieties of wine,
awarding a total of 118
medals.
Established in 1975, Clover
Hill was born when John and
Pat Skrip took a chance and
planted a small vineyard.
Success has made Clover Hill
an expanding family opera
tion, now realizing four vine
yards comprised of 55 acres
and their winery business.
Emphasis at Clover Hill is in
cultivating only the finest
quality grapes, and
winemaker John Script 111
said, “We put the same pride,
care, and concern in every
bottle we make.”
Other honors were given to
Adams County Winery, gain
ing a Silver Medal and Best

County Arts Council have
announced the annual design
competition for The Mary
land Wine Festival Poster for
2002.
Entries for this contest in
crease in number each year,
with a record of 67 entries re
ceived last year from all
across the nation.
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) Pennsylvania’s pro
duction of fall potatoes for
2000 totaled 3,510,000 CWT,
up 14 percent from 1999, ac
cording to the Pennsylvania
Agricultural Statistics Ser
vice. The value of production
was 27.2 million dollars, up
17 percent from 1999.
Potato sales totaled
3.301.000 CWT or 94 percent
of the 2000 crop. In 1999,
2.877.000 CWT, or 93 per
cent of the total production.

Design Competition Announced

for the 2002 Maryland Wine
Festival on Saturday, Sept.
21, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and
Saturday, Sept. 22, from
noon-6 p.m. at the Carroll
County Farm Museum in
Westminster, Md.

per CWT, compared to $7.55
in 1999. Of the total produc
tion, 44,000 CWT were used
on the farms where produced
and 165,000 CWT went to
shrinkage and other losses.
Farm use accounted for
31,000 CWT in 1999 and

were 172,000 CWT.
Nationally, acreage of all
potatoes harvested in 2000
totaled 1.35 million, up one
percent from the previous

price was $5.08 per CWT,
compared with $5.77 in 1999.
