Beginning in the early 18th cen tury, Vaucanson created the most intricate automatons. One of his most famous pieces was a duck that quacked when corn was thrown in front of it, then, stretched its’ neck and swallowed. The duck di gested the corn by means of a chemical so lution inside and finally “discharged it in biological fashion.” It also flapped its’ wings and played in water with its bill. Even more amazing it had to be wound only once. Another masterpiece by Vaucanson was a figure that played a shepherd’s pipe with one hand while beating a drum with the other. Often the craft was carried out as a fam ily business. The French Droz family is fa mous for two automatons. One figure, a writer, was said to have been able to write V^ rUC 4t/C77ON 4+ACRES AC D-15 TRACTOR ANTIQUES V 875 EAST CANAL RD, DOVER, PA SAT., JAN. 26, 2002 8:00 am^\ DIR: Just East Of Hakes Store On Canal Rd., At The Intersection Of Bull & Canal Road, From 1-83 Exit 28 (Stnnestown), Take Susquehanna Trail South 2.5 Miles To Canal Rd. It has yet to be dis covered. it is known however that the Droz family created lifelike automatons for the King of Spain, including a dog guarding a basket of fruit. When the fruit was removed the dog barked. When you consider that these mechani cal objects were operated not only by clockwork but water, wind, or mercury they seem all the more fantastic. Another famous automaton maker was Jean Maillardet(l74B-1834). One of his unique pieces was a kneeling boy who wrote English and French sentences with pen and ink, and drew landscapes. Anoth er of his documented automatons was a lady pianist who played 18 pieces of music. She first bowed to the audience , then her eyes looked at the musical score while her fingers went through playing motions on the keys. By the 19th centuiy famous doll makers such as Jumeau turned their talents to doll automatons. Some of these have sold for $B,OOO or more at auction. CLUES: The old, rarer and more intricate the automaton the higher the price. Original clothing and parts add to the value. 20th century advertising auto matons still sell for a few hundred dollars. Most common and least ex pensive are the tiny singing birds, mass-produced over the years in Europe and popular as souvenirs. The least expensive come in brass cages. The most expensive are in gold cages decorated with precious stones. ?
