State Farm Women Award GLEN ROCK (York Co.) The Pennsylvania Society of Farm Women has announced its scholarship award recipients for 2001-2002. “We had 12 very deserving ap plicants and were pleased to be able to award $l,OOO scholarships to each of them,” said Naomi Bupp, Glen Rock, who chairs the state organization’s scholarship awards committee. The Society of Farm Women scholarship awards are granted to eligible applicants who are children or grandchildren of members, and are pursuing either home/ family management or ag riculture-related majors in ad vanced education programs. Funding for the education pro gram is two-part, according to Bupp, who says that 40 cents of each member’s $3 annual dues goes to the scholarship program. Funds available for providing scholarship awards have gotten a significant boost since 1991, when the Society’s popular fund raiser cookbook first came off the press. More than 23,000 of the unique cookbooks have been sold in the 10 years since. The cook book project was begun by Bupp during her tenure as state presi dent. Farm Women scholarships for the 2001-2002 school year have been awarded to the following re cipients: Brett Johnston, 20, is a sopho more at Penn State Mont Alto, majoring in agriculture. He is the son of Thomas. and Melinda Johnson, Hamer Road, Gettys burg, and a 1999 graduate of Gettysburg High School. A for mer member of the Barlow-Mt. Joy 4-H Club, Johnston has worked with farming and land scaping, and been employed by Penn DOT. His grandmother is a member of Franklin County Group #5. Jessica Latham, 20, is a junior at Penn State, University Park, with a goal of becoming a veteri narian. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Latham, Lime Street, Quarryville. A 1999 grad uate of Solanco High School, La tham was an honor society stu dent, active in the band, FFA, and a peer mentor. Her grand mother is a member of Lancaster County Group #2B. Emme Mellott, 19, is a sopho more at Penn State Mont Alto, majoring in agriculture education with the goal of a teaching ca reer. Her parents are James and Sherrie Mellott, whose Holstein Jersey dairy operation is located on Lemar Road, Mercersburg. Mellott is a 2000 graduate of James Buchanan High School, was active with dairy judging, and a summer intern with the Tara Zimmerman is a member of Franklin County Group #6. Michelle Miller, 19, is a fresh man at Bridgewater College, in the pre-vet program, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. Her parents are Greg and Cindy Miller, Hollywood Drive, York. She is a 2001 honor society grad uate of York Suburban High School, a varsity team swimming, soccer, and cross country mem ber, and a member of the York 4-H lamb club. Her grandmother, Arlene Miller, is a member of York County Group #ll. Ryan Miller, 20, is a sopho more at SUNY Cobleskill major ing in ag technology. He is the son of Calvin and Susan Miller, Werner Road, Fredericksburg. A June 2000 graduate of Northern Lebanon High School, Ryan was a tri-captain of the football team and active in Lebanon County 4-H and junior Holstein activi ties. In addition to working on the family farm, he has been em ployed by Landis Bros., Inc. His mother and grandmother are members of Lebanon County Group #2O. Troy Miller, 23, is a senior at Penn State, University Park, ma joring in agro-ecosystems. His parents are Calvin and Susan Miller, Werner Road, Fredericks burg. A 1997 graduate of North ern Lebanon High School, Troy is active in Penn State’s agronomy and dairy science clubs and is a member of the Penn State base ball team. He has worked as an extension summer intern, works for the agronomy department at Penn State, as well as the Adven tis Chemical Company. His mother and grandmother are members of Lebanon County Group #2O. Robert Musser, 20, is a fresh man at Penn College, William sport, majoring in the field of landscaping and nursery. His parents are Randall and Linda Musser, Buckstown Road, Stoys town. Robert is a June 2001, graduate of Shanksville Stony creek High School where he was class treasurer, outstanding track boy for two seasons and did work/study with landscaping firms. He has been active in 4-H sheep competition and Somerset area Civil Air Patrol. His mother is a member of the Somerset County Group #l2. Lisa Nissley, 21, is a junior at Indiana University of Pennsylva nia, majoring in family and con sumer sciences with a goal of as sisting children. Her parents are Thomas and Kathy Nissley, Parkview Drive, Manheim. A 1998 graduate of Manheim Cen tral, Lisa is actively involved in university program including serving as president and student chair of the Pennsylvania Associ ation of Family and Consumer Services. She has worked as a staffer with the Appalachian Service Project for low- income housing and as a 4-H summer as sistant with Lancaster County ex tension programs. Lisa’s grand mother, Gayle Fry, is a member of Cumberland County Group #l7. Kevin Pfautz, 20, is a freshman at Penn State majoring in animal science with a goal of working with the swine industry. His par ents, Rick and Sue Pfautz, reside at Pleasant View Drive, Lititz. A Warwick High School graduate, Kevin was co-captain of the var- Lancaster Farming, Scholarships sity football team, a former wres tler, and active with the FFA’s pumpkin raising project. He has won numerous 4-H swine honors, including champion on-foot at the Harrisburg KILE show. Along with having worked at various employment positions, Kevin and his brother have a small swine breeding herd in partnership. Kevin’s mother is a member of Lancaster County Group #3. Barbara Reichard, 20, is a freshman at Penn State Mont Alto, majoring in agriculture sci ence. Her parents are Jesse and Tonya Reichard, Pump Horse Road, Waynesboro. She is a 2000 graduate of Waynesboro Area High School, she was president of the FFA chapter, varsity volley ball team member and wrestling team manager. Active in 4-H dairy club, Barb was also presi dent of the county council. She has worked on the family dairy farm as well as done a work study program with the extension service. Barbara’s mother is a member of Franklin County Group #4. Addison Rook, 21, is a senior at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, majoring in wildlife and fisheries. His parents, Arnold and Lucinda Rook, reside at Brick Church Road, Newville. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1998. Rook is president of the UT Wildlife So ciety, and a leader in its wildlife programs including research work with fish, turkeys, bear, deer, small mammals and has as sisted with the elk relocation pro gram in Tennessee. He was a 2001 summer intern with the Du naway Hunting and Fishing Club. Tara Zimmerman, 19, is a sophomore at Susquehanna Uni versity, majoring in pre-veteri nary courses. She is the daughter of Warren and Sharon Zimmer man, Cumberland Street, Leba non. Tara graduated in 2000 from Cedar Crest High School. She has been a 4-H member and dairy club exhibitor for several years, actively involved in exhibi ting at the Lebanon 4-H Fair. During her freshman year, Tara has been a work-study student at the university. Her grandmother, Anna Deckert, is a member of Lebanon County Group #l6.
