A42-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 15,2001 National Feeder Cattle Weekly Summary St. Joseph, Mo. December 7,2001 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL FEEDER CATTLE SUMMARY for week ending Dec. 7. Re ceipts this week 245,200; last week 156,000 year ago 249,000. Compared to last week, yearling feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady on limited offerings. Calf prices trended steady to 3.00 higher on heavy re ceipts, with Southeastern calves under 450 lbs as much as 5.00 higher. The volatile, feeder prices were much calmer this past week and the word “steady” re appeared on many market reports across the country. Which is refreshing, after the bucking that this feeder cattle market has undergone over the last month. The next ten days in Las Vegas at the National Finals Rodeo will seem mild com pared to the “wild ride” that feeder cattle buyers and sell ers have been experiencing. Large runs of calves helped buyers put loads together, especially at the single-head auctions of the Southeast. Buyers have now caught up on orders for wheat cattle, following the rush brought on by brief periods of rain and snow in the Southwest. However, the Plains remain very dry and the winter wheat crop conditions are not good at this point in the growing season. The lack of wheat pasture does not seem to be curbing the demand for calves, since back grounders have learned how to make use of growing yards and cheap feed over the last few years. Many calves are showing up at the markets in some stage of weaning and in favorable flesh conditions fatT buyers. Direct country trading con tinues to be relatively light for this year’s spring calf crop; amid' -uncertain market conditions. Most calves are going to the auc tion markets, although it doesn’t seem that long ago that people were saying there is no longer a place for salebarns in this world of direct, video, and internet marketing. This week’s numbers show that there is still a need for the sounds of a yelling nngman, a crack ing whip, and clanging gates; along with the smells of manure, cigarettes, and greasy hamburgers. Nearly 17.000 head of feeder cattle were sold at the Oklahoma City Stockyards and OKC West m El Reno, Oklahoma; two auctions in La Junta, Colorado, sold over 14,000 head this week. Around 29.000 head of feeder cattle made their way through the ring at the Joplin Regional Stockyards this past week. Lancaster Farming Check out our web site with the addition of two spe cial Wean-Vac auctions where calves sold at a 4.00- 6.00 premium. Fat cattle prices leveled off this week to trade 1.00 lower at 65.00, after advancing 6.00 in the two previous weeks. This week’s reported volume in cluded 34 percent over 600 lbs.
