Many dairy farms across the Northeast have begun hiring Hispanic work ers to meet their labor requirements. This ap proach has helped many farms deal with the challenge of main taining a well-trained workforce on their farms. However, bringing Hispanic workers on to the farm has pre sented another whole set of challenges, espe cially with the lan guage barrier between the Hispanic workers and owners, mana gers, and employees. The Capitol Region Dairy Team has orga nized a “Spanish for Dairymen’’ course that will be offered at the Lancaster County Farm and Home Center in Lancaster and at the Adams County Agriculture and Natural Resource Center in Gettysburg. The courses will begin on Monday, Jan. 14, from noon to 4:30 p.m. at each location and run for 13 consec utive Mondays. Dairy farm owners, mana gers, and employees who work with Hispanic farm work ers or who are consid ering this alternative will greatly benefit from the program. Cost of the entire 13- week program, includ ing all books, materials, cassette tapes, and instruction is $525. To register for or to request more informa tion about the Spanish for Dairymen pro grams, please contact Vinton Smith at (888) 472-0261, ext. 312 or by e-mail to vsmith@psu.edu no later than Jan. 4.
