NATIONAL FEEDER CATTLE
SUMMARY for week ending Nov 23.
Receipts: this week 48,100; last week
176,300; year ago 65,700. Compared to
last week, feeder steers and heifers sold
2.00-5.00 higher on this Thanksgiving
holiday shortened week. Some early
week auctions were quoted as much as
10.00 higher by the USDA’s Livestock
and Grain Market News Service, after
five straight weeks of lower prices. This
market can make a cattleman feel like
he’s on a runaway rollercoaster, hanging
on for dear life and his hat just flew off.

It’s unclear which factor is responsible
for this sudden turnaround. Limited hol
iday receipts may have helped, but that
is no reason to pay sharply higher prices.
Recent rains across the winter wheat re
gions boosted calf demand. However,
colder weather will soon put wheat into a
dormant stage and conditions are pres
ently so wet that cattle are sure to tromp
out what little grazing there is.
Last week’s cattle-on-feed report
showed light numbers of cattle weighing
over 700 lbs placed oil feed in October,
which supported the yearling market
and the spring outlook for fats. Also,
cattle futures made significant advances
and dressed beef prices turned sharply
higher as buying increased for expected
post turkey sandwich demand. What
ever the reason, this ride is headed back
up after a dip that left most people’s
stomachs behind. Packers paid a full
5.00 more for slaughter steers and heif
ers this week at 65.00, and dressed sales
were 4.00-S.OO higher at 105.00. Disper
sal was good with the five major trading
areas tuming-in 199,400 head of negoti
ated sales to the USDA’s Mandatory
Price Reporting System through Friday
afternoon. Cattle sellers were able to
hold down their Thanksgiving dinner,
but next week could be several dollars in
either direction if this volatile trend con
tinues. This week’s reported volume in
cluded 37 percent over 600 lbs, but keep
in mind that many Southeastern calf
auctions were closed.
