Being a leader seems to run in
Smith’s family. “My family was
in 4-H in New Jersey,” he said. “I
couldn’t wait to turn ten years
old, because I knew the next calf
born was mine,” said Smith, who
watched four older sisters show
dairy animals before he was old
enough to participate, also. A
younger brother and younger sis
ter also exhibited animals
through 4-H. “It was just the
thing to do,” he said. Parental
support, such as his father driv
ing the truck to shows, was a big
part of the family’s commitment
to 4-H.
After Smith grew too old to be
a 4-H’er himself, he became a
junior leader for the dairy club.
In addition to the dairy 4-H club,
he participated in a state ex
change and spent a week in
Maine. His family also hosted
4-Hers as part of an exchange.
Joined by his wife. Dale, the
couple moved from Mercer
County, New Jersey to Pennsyl
vania. After the move Smith was
planning to take a break from
4-H leadership. However his past
involvement was found out after
the family had been in Pennsyl
vania only a few months, accord
ing to Smith. He didn’t hesitate
to get involved again, however,
and began to organize the dairy
club for the northern Lancaster
County area, now the “Kows ‘R’
Us” club.
“When I was in 4-H, there was
an older gentleman who had the
leadership of the club. When I
started leading a club, somebody
said, ‘why are you doing this?’,
and I said, ‘somebody did it for
me. The need was there.’”

“It is fun to see what the kids
get out of it,” he said. “I think
they give us more than we give
them.” His own four children
have exhibited or are exhibiting
cattle through 4-H. The Smith’s
son Brian, who has Downs Syn
drome, has also shown cattle as a
4-H’er. “It gave him a lot of con
fidence,” said Smith’s wife Dale.
Their daughter, Liz, not only
showed animals as a 4-H’er but
also has experience in leading
clubs. “I became a leader as soon
as I graduated from 4-H primari
ly because of watching my par
ents work with our clubs over the
years,” said Liz. “Both my par
ents are responsible for instilling
the value of volunteering and giv
ing back to the community in me
and I feel I’m a better person for
it.”
The couple own and operate
