York Fair Hosts Open Breeding Sheep Show MICHELLE RANCK-KUNJAPPU Lancaster Farming Staff YORK (York Co.) “It was a super show. There was the quali ty you’d expect for this show,” said Dr. Robert Herr, judge of York Fair’s Open Breeding Sheep Show. “We have represented some of the best of the best. Some of the animals could compete any place in the East,” he said. “I feel that we’ve had a really good show,” said Jose Flory, York Fair sheep superintendent. “The quality of the animals was super, and the juniors did a won derful job.” The Cheviot ram was “the right kind,” according to Herr, “a long muscular buck that will pro duce the kind of lambs as far as size, scale, and balance that the market wants.” The ram is owned by John Eaton, Windsor. Beginning with 4-H involve ment, Eaton, has now been in the sheep business for 15 years. An ag lender for a bank in York County, Eaton has 90 sheep, mostly Cheviots and Dorsets, at his home and sells breeding stock. He exhibits his animals at Key stone, and the Farm Show and goes to Louisville, Kentucky for breed shows. His homebred Cheviot yearling caught the eye of Dr. Herr, who gave it the nod for grand champi on ram placing. The ram is sold to a producer in New Hampshire and will move at the end of the month. “The Southdown ewe is a great pattern for the breed with a lot of muscle, breed character, and length of body,” said Herr, an order buyer and Dorset breeder. Bill Leib, Mechanicsburg, pur chased his grand champion Southdown ewe at a national sale in Oklahoma in May. “I felt the character qualities like length, size, thickness, cor rectness, breed character, the ewe was a total package,” said Leib, who worked at the operation in Oklahoma where the ewe origi nated. “I knew the genetic back ground, and I knew I wanted that in my flock,” he said. With 20 years of experience, Leib is no stranger to the show ring. “Mom and Dad had sheep ever since I was born,” he said, adding that he not only enjoys the competition but also meeting and making lifetime friends with other exhibitors on the show ring circuit. Leib houses his 15 brood ewes and 20 brood does on eight acres at home. The fair season is a whirlwind of activity for Leib, who exhibits all four species of market animals at fairs in Penn sylvania. Showing sheep at the national junior show, North American In ternational Livestock Exhibition (NAILE), and other shows which takes him to lowa, Ohio, and In diana for other shows. “I believe that, to have the best animals, you have to compete against the best,” he said. Tough competition, he said, allows him to “see how my animals com pare” to other top animals. Leib, a culinary arts major at Johnson and Wales University, Providence, Rhode Island, cur rently has an internship at Hotel Hershey. Also during the sheep show Samuel Hayes, Pennsylvania sec retary of agriculture, helped to present two checks to the York Fair from the state fair fund. The first check, $25,000, will be used for improvement on the physical infrastructure at the fair. A new roof on the arts and crafts build ing is on the fair’s “to do” list. The second check, $49,600, will go toward operating ex penses, which include premium money and the cost of running the fair. Agriculture Secretary Sam Hayes recently met with Pennsylvania seniors and produce growers last week at the Wilkes-Barre Farmers Market to en courage participation in the Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program. “The program is a ‘win-win’ situation for both produce grow ers and nutritionally at-risk older Pennsylvanians,” Secretary Hayes said. “Thanks to the participation of hundreds of produce growers across the state, we are getting Pennsylvania-grown fruits and vegetables from the fields to the tables of people who need them the most.” The program provides $2O in coupons to nutritionally at-risk seniors to purchase produce from participating farmers markets. It receives nearly $2 million in state funding each year. Older Pennsylvanians should contact their local Area Agency on Aging to determine their eligibility. Wilkes-Barre is one of 11 areas added this year to the program, expanding the total num ber of pilot areas to 19. More than 450 produce growers participate in the Seniors and WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Programs. To find a local farmers market, the “Consumer’s Guide to Pennsylvania Farm Markets” is available through the Depart ment of Agriculture’s Bureau of Market Development. For a copy of the guide, call (717) 787-4210 or visit www.state.pa.us or directly at www.pda.state.pa.us. Farmers interested in participating in either of the Farmers Market Nutrition Programs should call the Department of Agri culture’s Bureau of Food Distribution at 1-800-468-2433. Two ram lambs. 1.
