    Carbon County Fair Hosts Sheep, Swine Shows

Judge Dave Hosterman, swine
herdsman for Penn State Univer
sity, reviewed the 49 entries of
the Carbon County 4-H swine
show at the Carbon County Fair
recently.
Justin Cunfer, 17, of East Penn
Township, was Hosterman’s se
lection as champion fitter and
champion showman. Cunfer,
president of the Carbon County
4-H livestock club will be a senior
this year in the Lehighton school
district. A nine-year member of
the club, Cunfer has exhibited
swine locally and at the Blue Val
ley Farm Show and Pennsylvania
Farm Show.
Reserve fitter honors went to
intermediate fitter, Sarah Miller,
12, also of East Penn Township
with junior showman Christian
Graver, 11, receiving the reserve
showman title.

Fabricators of Galvanized Barn Equipment
went on to have her 229-pound
Chester White entry from the
heavy lightweight class named
the reserve champion market hog
of the show. Graver also took
first place honors in the pair of
market hog competition. A sixth
grade student at Lehighton Mid
dle School, Graver said she
named her pig “Chester” even
though it was a gilt Graver said
that of all of her project animals,
she enjoys the pigs the most.
The champion market hog title
went to the 261-pound Hamp
shire-Duroc cross gilt named
Charlotte owned by Christiana’s
younger brother, Luke Graver. A
first year member, Luke will be in
the fourth grade this fail. Both
Gravers will be having entries at
the Blue Valley Farm Show and
the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
During the annual 4-H live
stock sale conducted later that
week the grand champion mar
ket hog of Luke Graver sold to
Houser Auctioneers, New Ring
gold, for $5lO. Tim Billig of Billig
Farms, new Tripoli, was the suc
cessful bidder at $390 for the re
serve champion market hog of
Christiana Graver.
Later that day, Christie Webb,
a 1999 graduate of Delaware Val
ley College with a major in large
animal science and member of
the colleges’ judging team re
viewed the entries of the 4-H
market lamb and 4-H and open
sheep show at the Carbon Coun
ty Fair.
In the fitting and showman
ship competition of the 4-H mar
ket lamb and 4-H breeding sheep
shows, Webb selected intermedi
ate fitter Ashley Barry, 15, of
East Penn Township, as her
champion fitter. Barry was also
selected as champion showman
with Laura Mazur, 12, of Weath
erly, as the reserve champion
showman.
In the market lamb weight
classes, Snickers, the 118-pound
Suffolk winner of the medium
heavyweight class owned by
Barry was selected as the grand
champion market lamb of the
show. Hometown Farmers’ Mar
ket, Hometown, was the success
ful bidder at $360 for Barry’s
champion market lamb.
The 126-pound Hampshire of
Christiana Graver, 11, of Frank
lin Township, from the heavy
weight class was named the re
serve champion market lamb.

ket lamb sold to Myron Everett/
of Little Acres Farm, Lehightoii;
for the high bid of $2lO.
In the pair of market tombs
class, Bany’s pair took die first
place ribbon with Grayer’s pair
following in second. t '
Barry, Graver and Mazur
enjoy showing sheep and have
each started thcjr own breeding
flock. Later in die breeding sheep
classes, Graver’s Hampshire
ewe from the one year and
under two class was selected
as the champion Hampshire
ewe. “You have to appreci
ate the style and balance of
~ this ewe” said Webb about
the Jan. 2000 Blue Acre
0023, daughter of Schlichter
9-47 TW and C Brubaker
Blue Acre 9404 TW. This
ewe went on to be named
the reserve champion ewe of
the show for Graver.
Mazur’s Shropshire ewe
from the one year and
under two class, FW Heaton
and family 99-453, a Dec.
1999 daughter of Elsbury’s
Positive Step 430 and FW
Heaton and family 98-343
went on to capture the
champion Shropshire ewe
title.
In the Montadale breed
Shull 013, affectionately
known as Clover, a Feb.
2000 daughter of Salfner
96-1272 and Shull 626 cap
tured the title of champion
Montadale ewe for Mazur.
Mazur also exhibited the
champion Montadale ram
who was later named the
Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 15,2001-A3l
champion ram of the show by
Webb.
In the Suffolk competition,
Mazur again earned the champi
on ewe title with her ewe. North
ern Starr 99-20, an April 1999
daughter of George Bros. 3882
and Sandhill 704-B. This ewe
went on to receive the champion
ewe of show honors.
