Great Animals,
(Continued from Page A 1)
“(These animals) can stand a
phenomenal amount of competi
tion as they go on,” he said of
the class winners.
Two animals from Woodbine
Farm near Airville in York
County took championship
honors.
Justin Hall’s spring yearling
was named champion heifer in
the youth division. Christina
Knight’s senior 3-year-old cow
won grand champion of the
show.
Hall’s heifer was also named
reserve junior champion in the
open class.
Cousins Hall and Knight are
both members of the Airville

Producers And Ag Businesses
(Continued from Page A 1)
will “increase sales without need
for a middleman.”
The map should especially
benefit small producers and
businesses that are located in
places less visible to consumers,
he said.
Day first conceived the idea of
AgMap about a year ago, not
only as as a marketing tool for
producers and ag businesses, but
also as a way to keep track of ag
ricultural trends across the state.
“No one really has a good da
tabase of the extent of all the ag
businesses in the state,” Day
said. One of the goals of AgMap
is to create such a database.
“We’re trying to put all Penn
sylvania ag-related businesses
on the map,” he said.
As part of the World Wide
Web, AgMap will help create
markets for Pennsylvania ag
products and services in other
states and even around the
world, Day pointed out.
“You could be in Brazil and
search for Pennsylvania (prod
ucts,)” he said.
Day began developing the
Website out of a concern for the
loss of Pennsylvania farmland
and the subsequent loss of ag
businesses across the state.

Tough Choices At Holstein Show
grandmother Knight’s Wood
bine Farm.
Knight has been showing
dairy animals for about eight
years and will be a sophomore
this fall at Kennard Dale.
One of the things Knight likes
best about going to dairy shows
is “meeting new people,” she
said.
The show posted the follow
ing results:
Spring calf: 1. Dustin Homing. 2. Chad E.
Horst. 3. Caitlyn Ruch.
Winter calf: 1. Cameron Knight. 2.
Nathan Heim. 3. Kelly Homing.
Fall calf: 1. Holly Miller. 2. Nathan Beiler.

According to Day, although
many Pennsylvanians under
stand that farmland is being
lost, the total meaning of that
loss is harder to grasp.
“What isn’t understood is the
ag businesses (that are) being af
fected,” he said. “(AgMap) is a
good tool to track the change of
land use and all of the support
ing businesses.”
Day hopes that agricultural
information and trends brought
to light by AgMap will ulti
mately be used as tools to affect
government policies related to
Pennsylvania agriculture by
“helping politicians understand
the extent of the industry.”
At this point, about 150 pro
ducers and businesses are en
tered on AgMap, according to
extension associate Stewart
Bruce.
Besides gaining exposure to
consumers, producers will bene
fit from the site by being able to
locate a wide variety of farm
supplies and services from
seeds to consultants, Stewart
said. They will also be able to
use the map to network with
other producers.

State extension office.
