ELIZABETHTOWN (Lancas
ter Co.) Elizabethtown Fair
hosted its annual beef show
Wednesday morning at the fair
grounds.
In the breeding beef show,
Adam Zurin’s Shorthorn heifer
got the nod from judge John
Hausner for a grand champion
finish.
Adam, 14, has been showing
cattle for four years, and sheep
since early childhood. Cattle,
however, now take up a lot of his
“show time” as he has traveled to
the Eastern Regional Shorthorn
Show and Eastern Nationals in
Maryland, the National Short
horn Show in Ohio, KILE, the
Farm Show, and will go to the
Maryland State fair to compete.
At toft Courtney Wolfgang won champion placing of the sale steers, (< Caitlin and
Adam Zurin took home reserve champion of the non-sale beef, Jen “Joker,” her
Shultz won champion placing of the non-sale beef, and Caitlin Wolfgang own homebred

E-town Fair Posts Beef Show Results
The Zurins have 20 head of cattle
at home in Mount Joy.
In her first season of showing
cattle Tiffany Bender won re
serve champion with her Angus
heifer. Tiffany, 13, also has five
breeding sheep at home.
The daughter of Dean and
Sarah Wehry, Tiffany got involv
ed in showing animals because
her younger brother wanted
sheep, according to her mother.
However when Tiffany tried
showing animals she found that
she really enjoyed competition, so
she purchased a heifer for the
show ring and has taken the ani
mal to the Mid-Atlantic Nation
als in Maryland, the Beef Expo in
State College, the Farm Show,
and the Angus Breeders’ Show in
Huntingdon County.
“She jumped in with both
feet,” said her mother, Sarah.

Jen Shultz, 11, and “Frosty”
took home the reserve champion
in the non-selling beef show.
“Frosty,” a Shorthorn/Maine
Anjou cross, was purchased at
KILE.
The Shultzes have 25 cattle,
mostly Herefords, at home.
According to her father the fami
ly is breeding Hereford/Angus
crosses for commercial or club
calf purposes.
She is the daughter of David
and Julie Shultz, Dillsburg.
The sale steer division of the
market beef show yielded results
for sisters Courtney and Caitlin
Wolfgang.
Courtney, 14, and her home
bred “Batman,” a Simmental/
Angus/Chianina cross, topped
the sale steer classes to be named
champion of the division. Court
ney, who has already competed
at roundup,
plans to exhibit
at the Farm
Show this Janu
ary.
At last year’s
Farm Show
Courtney was
crowned the
Simmental
queen for Penn
sylvania.

the sisters have
exhibited at the
Simmental
Pennsylvania/
Maryland Field
Day, the Eastern
Simmental Re
gionals in Indi
ana, and the
Farm Show.

the Wolfgang’s home farm,
“Messick Farms” in Middletown,
took home reserve champion
placing of the sale steer division.
The steer is a Simmental/Angus
cross.
Caitlin, 11, also shows horses.
They are the daughters of
Patty and Brian Wolfgang.
In the dairy beef show Aman
da Hersey, 9, Elizabethtown, won
reserve champion of the show
with “Snowy.” She is the daugh
ter of Steve and Heidi Hershey.
Amanda, who hails from a
300-acres dairy farm, also show
ed swine at the fair. “Snowy” was
from another local farm and did
well under Amanda’s walking,
bathing, brushing, and show ring
practice, a job which took an
hour a day close to the show, said
Amanda.
Sarah Daniels, 10 took home
champion placing of the dairy
beef show.
Sarah scored In her first year
in the beef ring with her 4-H
project. She exhibited sheep last
year and also expanded her 4-H
participation to include livestock
judging.
Her steer, from “Catalpa
Farm” in Middletown, was pur
chased especially for the project.
Sarah has five sheep and her lone
steer on the farm.
She plan to take “Lightening”
to Manheim Fair to compete.
“It’s fun if the steer is under con
trol,” said Sarah.
She is the daugh
ter of Matt and

John Hausner, Dover, judged
the show. John and his wife,
JoAnn, not only breed Angus cat
tle and have 75 head at home in
York County, but also judge beef
shows in Pennsylvania and six
surrounding states. Hausner esti
mate that he judges at 20-25
shows per year.
