National Feeder Cattle
Weekly Summary
St. Joseph, Mo.
Aug. 17,2001
Report Supplied By USDA
NATIONAL FEEDER CATTLE
SUMMARY - Week ending Aug. 17,
2001. Receipts this week 167,000; last
week 152,300; year ago 164,200. Feeder
cattle prices rebounded a bit from last
week’s lower prices on the calves, but
yearlings did not fare as well. According
to USDA’s Livestock and Grain Market
News Service, calves mostly steady to
2.00 higher with some classes of calves
up to 5.00 higher in the Southeast. Year
ling cattle were quoted mostly steady to
weak, with some direct sales as much as
2.00 lower on slow country trading.
The Southern Plains are just now
starting to see some moisture falling
from the sky. Many are wondering what
it is; they haven’t seen any rain in so
long. Spotty rains occurred over last
weekend and a front moved through
that dropped widespread showers this
week and gave the area a much needed
break from hot, humid weather. As those
in the Southern Plains move toward Sep
tember, wheat and rye pasture planting
is just around the corner. It appears that
the weather pattern moving through has
left much optimism about getting crops
to sprout and grow quickly. Already arid
states in the Northwest are seeing more
wildfires erupting after lightning strikes;
starting underbrush afire and the situa
tion is growing out of hand quickly.
Many ranchers sold their calves 30-45
days early due the severe drought condi
tions in the Plains.
Direct feedlot sales took back what
was lost last week as live sales were
quoted 1.00 higher at mostly 70.00 and
dressed sales 2.00 to 3.00 higher at
112.00-113.00.
This month has been interesting as
CME’s August Live Cattle futures have
been trading near a 2.00 premium to the
cash trade. For the true hedgers, it seems
the conditions are in their favor to de
liver. As of Thursday evening this week,
month to date total loads tendered came
to a sum of 366. Some in the industry are
calling 366 only a moderate number at
this time in the delivery month. Hedgers
are keeping their eyes on the fall and
winter Live Cattle futures as they hover
in the middle 70’s.
Today’s bearish Cattle on Feed
Report pegged inventory at 107 percent.
Placements were 104 percent, mostly to
blame for this is the drought conditions
in the South that forced grass cattle to
depart early. The marketing number oi
99 percent also weighed on the inventory
numbers. However, this was the most
positive number in the report as it was
toward the high end of industry guesses.
For the month of July, slaughter num
bers under federal inspection averaged
only 659,000. Chain speed will need to be
increased to get some of the excess fed
cattle moved into the food chain. This
week’s reported feeder supply included
43 percent over 600 lbs.
