The U.S. Department of Energy will sponsor two ethanol workshops for rural America in Pennsylvania in late August. They are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Mars, (north of Pitts burgh) at the Sheraton Inn, and Thursday, Aug. 30, in Grantville at the Holiday Inn. The workshops will explore how Pennsylvania farmers and agricultural businesses can profit from establishing ethanol plants in the state. A steering committee made up state farm organizations and agencies has provided assistance in planning the agenda and logistics for the workshops. Target audience for the work shops includes farmers, ranch ers, ag organizations, agencies that serve agriculture and busi nesses that support rural com munities. Others who are urged to participate include Rural Economic Development groups, bankers, local government offi cials, farmer owned coopera tives, county RC&D groups, and state and local environmen tal agencies. Audience partici pation will be encouraged and time will be allowed for ques tions and answers. Preregistering is encouraged to help with planning for space and luncheon. A $2O fee will be charged to cover the cost of luncheon. The agenda will be identical at each location. An introduc tion to the workshop will be given at 8:30 a.m. by Ann Heg nauer, of the DOE Office of Fuels Development, with a wel come by Secretary of Agricul ture Sam Hayes. The first session will be an introduction to Ethanol, to cover the basics and history of the fuel, presented by Bob Dineen, vice president of the Washington, D.C. based Re newable Fuels Association. The economics of marketing the fuel in the northeast will be presented by John Urbanchuk, a consultant with AUS.
