More than 500 livestock producers in Pennsyl vania have participated in a new Livestock Environmental Li teracy Course developed by Penn State University College of Agricultural Sciences Depart ment of Animal Science Exten sion to improve environmental awareness and stewardship among livestock producers. Development of the course was done by Penn State through the Commonwealth of Pennsyl vania State Conservation Com mission in response to a request from the state Senate for three educational products to help those involved with agricultural nutrient management issues. Certification course efforts thus far indicate a high degree of acceptance among agricultural producers. During the first winter meeting season (Nov. 9, 2000 through May 7, 2001), 525 people were enrolled and 506 completed the course. Enrollment was highest among swine producers (39 per cent), followed by dairy (14 per cent) and poultry (six percent). Additional participants in cluded other farmers, and regu latory personnel and professional educators. There is no cost to attend the Livestock Certification Course. Robert Meinen, senior exten sion associate, serves as the pro gram coordinator and generally teaches the course. In addition, extension agents or other educa tional professionals with ade quate in-service training can teach the course via computer, conventional slides, or overhead transparencies, depending on equipment available. Following the course, producers are re quired to attain a minimum score of 80 percent on an exam before receiving a certificate of completion.
