mirrors by a known maker come
to the market they’re costly. An
easel back mirror attributed to
20th century, English silversmith
William Comyns can sell at auc
tion for more than $2,000. They
were often part of a set that in
cluded candlesticks or vases. In
America, Tiffany and others
made quality mirrors with vari
ous sterling silver motifs.
Dressing table sets, known as
toilet service, in the 18th century
could include as many as 30
pieces. Brushes, combs, a glove
tray, and mirrors were among
them.
Hand mirrors weren’t usually
included until the late 19th cen
tury. These days just finding a
single piece can be expensive.
Toilet bowls (actually small
glass boxes) made in a variety of
shapes, were an important part of
a ladies service since they hald
beauty items such as powders,
salves, and pastes. By the 1880 s
they were made of cut glass with
fancy silver tops...often in Art
REAL ESTATE
Nouveau designs. Less expensive
were those of pressed glass with a
silver-plated lid.
Combs could either be orna
mental or utilitarian. By 1900
they were even designed for
pockets with their own engraved
silver cases.
Curling irons for men and
women, made in the early 20th
century, had beautifully designed
handles.' Those for men were
small and used to curl a mous
tache or beard.
CLUES: Some unlikely silver
collectibles could include tooth
brushes, razors and razor cases
and toothpicks. The toothbrushes
made from 1750 to the mid-19th
century consisted of a silver
frame that had interchangeable
ivories set with bristles. Silver
toothpicks were popular into the
early 20th century.
Wealthy traveling men of the
19th and early 20th century had
dressing sets in finely appointed
wood cases. Usually of silver
mounted mahogany. They con
tained silver or silver-gilt mount
ed cut glass bottles along with
toothbrushes, shaving kit, and
pot for soap.

These days mismatching is ac
ceptable for collectors. Many spe
cialize in one or two items like
cosmetic pots, hand mirrors or
brushes and combs. It doesn’t
matter if the brushes lack bristles
or the comb has missing teeth.
The silver design and age of the
piece is what counts.
