816-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 7,2001 HAPPENINGS District 4-H Horse Judging Contest District VI 4-H Horse Judging Contest took place recently at the York County 4-H Center in York. 4-H teams from Berks, Centre, York, Wyoming, Somer set, Perry and Cumberland coun ties participated. The Cumberland County team consisting of Mary Strasbaugh, Mechanicsburg, Carrie McLaughlin, Newville, and Mich elle Thomas, Carlisle, placed first with 998 points. Wyoming Coun ty team placed second with a team made up of Amy Gingher, Kristi Sincauisk, and Liz Weir. Cumberland County Team II placed third with a team consis ting of Trevor Long, Kristin Egolf, and Katie Gossert. Centre County and Perry County placed fourth and fifth respectively. Mary Strasbaugh, daughter of Glenda and Tim Strasbaugh, Me chanicsburg, placed first with an overall score of 345. Michelle Thomas placed second with a score of 335; Marie Getz of York County, third with a score of 323; Carrie McLaughlin, fourth with 318 points; and Kristi Sincauisk of Wyoming County, fifth with 309 points. Michelle Thomas placed first in the confirmation division and teammate Carrie McLaughlin was second. Jesse Bloom and Sa mantha Jacobi from Perry Coun ty placed third and fourth respec tively, and Amy Gingher from Wyoming County, fifth. Strasbaugh placed first in the Performance Division; Chuck Hartzog, Berks County, second; Alex Curtis, Centre County, third; Michelle Thomas, Cumber land County, fourth; and Marie Getz of York County, fifth. In the oral reasons, Strasbaugh placed first with a score of 89 with Carrie McLaughlin and Tre vor Long placing second and third respectfully. Marie Getz, York County placed fourth and Anya Ryba of Centre County, fifth. A junior team from County place first in the division with a score of 622. Perry County’s team placed sec ond and Centre County placed third. Kelly Jo Lucas of Centre County was high junior individu al and received a trophy for her score of 248. The 4-H members had four confirmation classes, namely, Saddlebred geldings, Percheron mares, Hunter Type horses and Stock Type horses. 4-H Scholarships Awarded To Lebanon County Students Four Lebanon County 4-H members were awarded $l,OOO scholarships recently by the Leb anon County 4-H Board of Direc tors. Natalie Funck, Anna Light, Nicole Platt and Alexis Zackey were selected based on their 4-H experience, community involve ment and academic achievement. Natalie Funck, the daughter of Dennis and Cindy Funck, Ann ville, will attend Millersville Uni versity majoring in Spanish and German education. A member of the North Mountain 4-H Club at Northern Lebanon High School, Funck is a member of the Na tional Honor Society and co-edit or of the school newspaper. Anna Light, daughter of Fred and Maureen Light, Lebanon, will attend Boston University majoring in costume production. A member of the 4-H Friends Club at Cedar Crest High School, Light is a member of the drama dub, as well as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Nicole Platt, daughter of John and Barbara Platt, Lebanon, will attend Lebanon Valley College this fall majoring in biology. Platt has served as a teen leader in the Avon-East Lebanon 4-H club. At Cedar Crest High School, she was a member of concert band, National Honor Society, and the Volleyball Team. Alexis Zackey, daughter of Leslie and Catherine Zackey, Lebanon, will be a sophomore at Bucknell University majoring in liberal arts. A member of the 4-H Friends Club, Zackey has been an active member for five years Berks junior completing projects in foods, clothing and photography. STEEL BALE BOXES Delaware County 4-H Livestock Auction Plan now to buy a high quality, grain fed pork or lamb at the an nual Delaware County 4-H Sum mer Fair Livestock Auction on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 11. Suburban families are encour aged to participate in the auction. 4-H volunteers will arrange for your animal to be transported to the USDA licensed butcher. Buy ers complete a “cutting order” specifying the cuts and packag ing for their meat, then pick up the frozen, packaged meat from the butcher later in the month. Youth members at the 4-H Farm and Educational Center in Newtown Square raise the mar ket animals. The 4-H Agricultur al Club gives suburban children the opportunity to have hands on experience at a working farm. By cooperatively raising sheep and pigs, members learn what it takes to produce the meat they see for sale in supermarkets. At the cul mination of the market animal project, members offer hogs and sheep for sale to people who are interested in putting high quality, grain fed meat in their freezer. For those unable to attend, lambs may be purchased for $2OO and hogs for $3OO anytime prior to the auction date. Cumberland County 4-H Horse Club Meets At the meeting of the Cumberland County 4-H Horse Club, the guest speaker was Dr. Bernie Far rell, who explained the causes and effects of dis eases such as West Nile and encephalitis. He told of the signs to look for if you be lieve if your horse has con tracted the virus and what to do to protect your horse. After Dr. Farrell spoke, local 4-H’er Mary Stras baugh explained the proper equipment to keep in a First Aid kit for your horse, and the importance of having one. Matt Meals conducted the meeting. Kathleen Gos sert gave a brief report on the tour of the State Police Horse Academy. Members broke into proj ect groups and the meeting was adjourned with refresh ments courtesy of Mary Strasbaugh. It was quoted that the expense is suppose to be expe rience. Jessica Sartell told about Three Cumberland County 4-H Horse Club members placed first at the District VI 4-H Horse Judging Contest held recently at the York County 4-H Center. Three other members placed third in the competition with 4-H mem bers from six counties participating.
