O THE ANTIQUE DETECTIVE Anne Gilbert Some Tips For Collecting Decorative Tiles Individual decorative tiles are coming to auction more often. A decade ago interesting examples were only found in boxes at mall antique shows and salvage yards. Prices were from $5 to $lOO for an unusual design or an identifi able maker. Not so these days. Travel to most any country in the world, and you’ll discover each has a rich history of decora tive tiles. Among the most color ful are the Islamic examples where palaces and walls as early as the 16th century were adorned with tiles. Surprisingly many are sold these days as individual pieces to collectors. Prices vary depending on eye appeal and rar ity. Figural dies painted in the style of 16th century Persian miniature painters can sell for as much as $lO,OOO a tile. 17th cen tury less decorative Islamic tiles can sell at auction for as little as $2,000 each. Decorative tile making in the 17th century traveled to Spain and Italy where they were made of Majolica. They were also made in Holland in huge quantities at that time and exported all over Europe. By 1630 tiles were being made in Delft in blue and white, with figures of soldiers, la dies, and horsemen. Later marine monsters, ships, and small land scapes were used for decoration. These sell at auction beginning at around $4OO each. By the 18th century poly chrome tiles were made in Liver pool. By the 19th century, tile pic tures were being made in Europe. Often a group bf six or eight small scenic tiles with every sub ject from cats add dogs to wind mills were placed in kitchens as art. By the late 19th century in England it became very fashiona ble to decorate fireplaces and fur niture with tiles. Wedgwood and Minton were among the makers of decorative tiles. CLUES: An artist attribution can up the value of 19th century tiles. When a pair of Wedgwood glazed earthenware tile pictures, c.lBBO with allegorical male and female figures attributed to Charles Toft came to auction last year, the estimated value was $4OO-600.
