terial used by Pennsylvania Ger
mans. Being frugal, the early set
tlers raised rye from which they
were able to derive bread flour,
animal feed, and baskets from
the leftover rye straw.
African Americans also left an
imprint on basket making. Quill
work woven into the baskets
evolved from the Gullahs who
came from Africa in the 1600 s
and settled off the coast of South
Carolina to work in rice planta
tions. Winnowing baskets in
large sizes to separate the chaff
from the rice straw.
It is only in recent years that
baskets have been made and
used primarily for decorative
purposes. Many of these are also
highly collectible. But the rare
