Four Teens Represent First State at 4-H National Conference NEWARK, Del. More than 350 4-H’ers among them four from the First State gathered recently for the 71st Annual Na tional 4-H Conference in Wash ington, D.C. The annual meeting, which brings together youth from across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, and the U.S. Virgin Is lands and serves as a leadership development opportunity for teens to address current issues and to help plan the direction of 4-H. Representing the First State at the meeting were Kelly Glan den, Wyoming; Chris Tinsman, Georgetown; Dusti Van derwende, Greenwood; and Karen Vattilana, Wilmington. According to Ted Palmer, University of Delaware Exten sion agent for Sussex County who accompanied the teens, the 4-H’ers were selected for their leadership ability and for their citizenship. Leland Swenson, president of the National Farmers Union (NFU) recently called on Con gress to immediately develop a mechanism by which farmers can be compensated for the staggering increases in energy related costs. The council works in conjunction with committees to plan and coordinate all activities and special events for the year. The new state council would plan state activities, he said. “Kelly Glanden presented the idea to the Kent County 4-H Council soon after returning from Washington,” said Palmer. “The other kids are talking with their councils now and plan to schedule their first meeting in the near future.” Palmer said the week-long Washington-based conference search, he urged members to take strong action to mitigate the greater-than $2 billion in crease in energy costs to Ameri ca’s farmers and ranchers in this period of low commodity prices. “Congress should take action to address the staggering in creases in production costs asso ciated with energy now plaguing America’s agricultural produc ers” Swenson said. In addition to their meetings at the Conference Center, the teens traveled to Capitol Hill, where they met with their U.S. representatives and senators. Two topics discussed were the Centennial of the 4-H in 2002 and the Younger Americans Act. This Act, to be introduced into Congress this year, will pro vide $5.75 billion in the next five years for youth development programs in local communities. The annual 4-H meeting that convenes in Washington each year has had a rich history of conferences since their genesis during the depression years. Palmer explained. “The first meeting was held in 1930,” he said, “when the teens camped in tents on the Capitol Green.” The 4-H program is an inter national youth development program, the largest in the world. In the U.S. alone, 4-H serves about 6.8 million mem bers in all 3,067 counties throughout the nation. Palmer said the teens he ac companied to Washington “were phenomenal. It was the first time any of them had been to the National Conference and they were terrific. “They told me they had a great time, learned lots of new things, got lots of new ideas, and said they wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” *. *v. The American Soybean Association (ASA) recently praised a group of 18 U.S. senators who are asking the Bush administration to include a growing role for biodiesel and ethanol in the Energy Task Force Report. The request came in the form of a letter spearheaded by Sena tors Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Tim Johnson (D-SD) to Vice President Richard Cheney, who leads the administration’s Energy Task Force. The senators stated that biodiesel and ethanol could meet three percent of the U.S. motor fuel market within 10 years providing energy, environmen tal and economic benefits for the nation. A three percent market share for biodiesel and ethanol would displace about nine bil lion gallons of motor fuels annu ally or between 500,000 and 600,000 barrels of crude oil each day. “ASA appreciates the efforts of these senators to promote do mestic energy production from biodiesel,” said ASA President Tony Anderson of Mount Ster ling, Ohio. “Increased biodiesel use would give a much-needed boost to soybean prices, farm income and the rural economy while re ducing U.S. dependence on im ported oil.” “Our rising dependence on imported petroleum has become a storm cloud over the econ omy,” Hagel said. “To meet our future energy needs, all sources of fuel and energy must be thor oughly explored and utilized. It contains no petroleum, but it can be blended easily with diesel. Biodiesel use in Europe has grown to 250 million gallons annually in the last 20 years. It is gaining popularity in the U.S. with more than 40 million suc cessful road miles of use. Any diesel engine can run on biodiesel, usually with no modi fications to the engine. It per forms comparably to diesel, with similar cetane and BTU content. Biodiesel is the safest of all fuels to use, handle and store. It will become increasingly important as ultra-low sulfur diesel regulations are imple mented because it adds lubricity that is often reduced as sulfur content drops. Biodiesel is the only alterna tive fuel to have passed the rigo rous Health Effects testing requirements of the Clean Air Act. Results show biodiesel re duces carcinogenic air toxics by 75-90 percent compared to diesel. The results, submitted to the EPA in 2000, also show biodiesel is non-toxic, biode gradable and free of sulfur. FEED BINS Expert Installation
