The New York State Senate has an nounced the Empire State Farm Assistance Program, setting $7O million aside to enhance the eco nomic development of one of our state’s most important industries agriculture. The Senate initia tive, when fully effective, will save farmers $4O million in taxes and will provide $3O million to agriculture for economic devel opment assistance. “Senate Majority Leader Bruno and Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Hoff mann have demonstrated their commitment to agriculture through this budget proposal,” stated John W. Lincoln, Presi dent of New York Farm Bureau. “Farms do not typically qualify for traditional economic develop ment programs. Funding for the program in the first year is $7.5 million, growing to $l5 million in the program’s third year. With this funding, Cornell University’s Co operative Extension will be better equipped to provide technical in formation about agricultural re search and technology, market ing and labor issues. The Strategic Farm Planning and Grant Program would ini tially provide $6 million in the fist year and grow to $l5 million in the third year, and would pro vide targeted assistance directly to farms for business planning.
